Solution for Dell Error Code 0146 ?

Hi,

I have a Dell 1501 which I had purchased long back and I recently got a Blue Screen. I ran a diagnostic scan and it gave me a hard drive DST Short test error code 0146. . Can anybody please help? However, is there any way for me to recover some of my files from the hard drive?

DST means "Drive Self Test", which indicates that the hard drive is failing. The best way would be to slave to another machine, preferably a desk. You will need an adapter to the IDE cable as the connector is smaller in the unity of 2 inches and a half. Whenever you can read, should be able to copy your data. For a slave to another laptop, you need a special enclosure with a USB connection

If the system still detects the hard drive (check BIOS, F2 to turn on), buy 2.5", if the USB drive (EIDE or SATA as appropriately) and mount the drive in it. Connect to a system Working via USB and see what can still be read.

Do you still have the original Windows operating system disk? If you do, then you could try booting the recovery console and run chkdsk / r. If you are under warranty, call Dell to correct the issue (they may be able to send you a new drive).
