    How to test usb ports

I have a P4 machine on which Windows Xp is been running as my operating system. Recently i had noticed that my dsl modem, which is connected to a usb port, stopped working. Its asking me to install an ethernet card on my pc. Before installing an ethernet card on my pc, would like to know that is there any way to test the usb ports? How to test usb ports on my pc? Has anybody tested their their usb ports on their pc? Let me know the way of doing it. Thanks in advance.

According to me it seems to be a driver issue or it can be also that your board is dying. For that check your System Properties by "Right Clicking" on My Computer, then you need to select Properties, then click on Hardware and finally select Device Manager and look for any "Problematic Devices" on your system.

USB Loopback plugs can be used to help diagnose, troubleshoot and load test your PC. Could it be that your USB is disabled in your BIOS? Active loopback plugs are the quickest, most effective way to verify that a PC's USB ports are working correctly. Try F8 at your splash screen and look at your USB status.
If its disabled they it won't work.

According to me it seems to be that your ports are fine, it might be likely that your usb hardware on your modem may be defective. So, i think you should install an ethernet card and should try the modem in that way.
