I Think that You are thinking about splitted backplane for SCSI
disks. actually it is an Interface which provide all disks on one bus, you can also have them on two different buses with two different channels.

2x4 splittled backplane is used, not just "2x4 backplane ". A split backplane is often used to handle a large number of signals. Split backplane configurations will divide bus connections between two motherboards (one on either side of the daughterboards). Using two motherboards shortens the path of connections to daughterboards and often improves performance.
