Maxtor One Touch suddenly disappeared Internal Error 2

    Hello, everybody.

I was downloading some file to my Maxtor OneTouch 4 and the file suddenly disappeared from the drive. I thought the problem was the application I was running so I quit it. Then tried to eject the drive, and was not able to do so, it said that the drive was in use. [I only had one application running by that time, which was firefox.]

In which case, I force quit my computer and restarted it. After it restarted I noticed that my external wasn't showing up on my desktop anymore, so I tried unplugging it from my computer, and plugging it back in, nothing happened. Then, I unplugged the power from the external and plugged it back in, and it started making unusual noises I haven't heard before, and the LED light on it stayed solid. After about 3 or so minutes of the noise, it stops..then My Maxtor Manager program is showing Internal Error 2 and a red "M" icon indicating backup failure when I try to backup my OneTouch III drive. What is wrong?

I would recommend you alway keeping the only important work on the external drive. I would install enough capacity to work locally on internal drives, and backup regularly to the external drive. One copy of data is data just begging to be lost Have you tried this one - http://www.ptdd.com/recoverlostparti...alharddisk.htm Never used it myself so don't know if it will do the job, but could be worth a go.

it may be possible it may have been wiped if your external drive was being accessed during the power failure , use some partition management software to see if that detects it as unallocated if so then it needs to be re-formatted in the file system in which your system uses e.i. NTFS for windows xp and after in order for it to be detected. that being said your data is not completely lost as there are many data recovery softwares that can recover data even from a re-formatted drive also is there power to the external drive as it may be something simple like a blown power supply? you could also try taking the eternal hard drive apart and connecting the HDD direct to your motherboard as you may have fried the control board in the caddy

Re: Maxtor One Touch suddenly disappeared Internal Error 2

This error generally appears in the OneTouch III Maxtor Backup log in the different Windows operating systems. The "M" icon in the System Tray turns red, and it says that the backup has failed.

    • It is always referring to a file that is open or in use. Most of the time, that refers to the Program Files of the Windows operating system, which is a folder located in the C: drive.
    • Most people choose to use Maxtor Backup to attempt to backup the entire contents of the C: drive, which is the boot drive of your Windows computer. The Maxtor Backup, however, is not made to backup the Program Files and certain other files and folders successfully.

Thus, when you choose the Program Files as a folder to be backed up, you will sometimes see this message because of your anti-virus programs and the like.

    Solution:
    • Close all files that are giving you this error and/or that are open during the backup, then try the backup again, and
    • Close down all anti-virus software during the running of the backup, or
    • Simply choose to backup only your data files, not the entire C: drive. Remember that Maxtor Backup is only meant to be a data backup, meaning your documents, photos, videos, music, etc. It is not meant to backup the entire operating system or to make a mirror image of your drive, or
    • To make a full clone or image of your hard drive, see about using $discwizard.
