USB 2.0. First, USB 2.0 is 40 times faster than USB 1.0. This is important for devices that require higher speed, such as USB Hard Drives, CDROMs, CDR/W and Flash Card Readers. It is not important for low speed devices, such as keyboard, mouse, or even a USB to Serial Converter. Second, it is backward compatible with USB 1.1, so USB 1.1 devices can plug into a USB 2.0 connection. USB 2.0 devices can also plug in to a USB 1.1 connection, but they will operate at slower speeds. Many new computers now come with USB 2.0 connections. You can connect USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 devices to these ports.

I don't quite understand what internal hardware you wish to connect on a laptop ?

To connect USB 2 external hardware ie Midi devices, USB 2 hubs, cameras and so on you can get a USB 2 PCMCIA card but either the card or the device will need to be powered. I use a belkin 2 port USB card and it works well.

No, your computer is stuck with the older USB speed.

TIP: Most USB 2.0 devices will work on USB 1.1, only slower.

Simple answer is no it can not be done The upgrade requires a hardware change. A USB 1.1 port is different electronics than a USB 2.0 port. A Microsoft CD-ROM may have different software components to support USB 2.0, but it cannot have software that will make a USB 1.1 port function as a USB 2.0 port.

The best option is to add a 4 port USB 2 PCI card.
Really it is your only option as anything else requires a replacement M'Board and whatever else goes along with the new M'Board. Depending on CPU type this could range from just a new M'Board to almost a new computer by requiring M'Board, CPU and RAM.
