    SSH into the iPod Touch

As many of you even after you unlock the ipod and maybe even bringing it to 1.1.2 you do not know how to enter SSH iPod Touch, and since I have nothing to explain it to me!

USERS GUIDE FOR MAC (or Linux)

    What you need:
    • an iPod Touch, no matter what version, but must be unlocked.
    • A wireless connection
    • A Mac (or PC with Linux, an OS that uses words like unix terminal)

    Time:
    • If your iPod is unlocked and read on to version 1.1.2, if the version is 1.1.1 (always unlocked) go to step 7
    • Connect the iPod and the Mac to the same wireless network.
    • Go (iPod) to Settings> Wi-Fi> "Your connection" and tap the blue arrow next to the connection, read and write down the IP address.
    • Go (from mac) in Applications> Utilities, and open the terminal.
    • Write these lines of code on the terminal (you can also use the copy-paste)

      Code:
      ssh-l root "your IP Code"
    • Now you should see a line saying "password" you write Alpine. Probably on the screen (I do not go out) you will not see the text you write and the cursor will remain at the same place, but do not worry, after writing "alpine" and hit enter you will see a line with a #.

CONGRATULATIONS you are now SSH iPod touch, which would be the end of the iPod, now you can write unix commands (if you know them !!!!) DO NOT ANY! Write only if you are unsure!

    • Your ipod to version 1.1.1 is released and you want to get nell'SSH? Sure! Then, go to Install dalll'installer> System and installed in order:

      BSD Subsystem
      OpenSSH

Having finished the installation go SSH icon and turn on SSH (even though it should already be activated!). Now you can proceed to step 2).

    GUIDE FOR WINDOWS USERS

    What you need:
    • an iPod Touch, no matter what version, but must be unlocked.
    • A wireless connection
    • A PC
    • The program WinSCP can be downloaded from here
    • The program can download Putty

    Time:
    1. If your iPod is unlocked and read on to version 1.1.2, if the version is 1.1.1 (always unlocked) go to step 6
    2. Connect the iPod and the Mac to the same wireless network.
    3. Go (iPod) to Settings> Wi-Fi> "Your connection" and tap the blue arrow next to the connection, read and write down the IP address.
    4. Open WinSCP downloaded.

      • WinSCP allows us to see the folders on your iPod touch and to also manage (copy files from an iPod etc), be careful because if we do not know what we could do damage!
      • Unpack the file we downloaded (winscp) and run it on our PC. The launch and in the Server Name field put the ip address that we have copied seen before.
      • At this point in the User Name field enter "root" and password as "alpine" (if the firmware version is earlier than 1.1.2 the password is "dottie") and click Login, if you get a message with details on key clicked yes and move on.
      • Now you open a window with two columns, one on the right is our touch to the left our PC. We can explore the contents of folders using the button at the top right (the one with the up arrow) that allows us to level up.
      • To exit simply close the program
      .

Now you know how to get into the folders of the iPod Touch from your PC, now let's see how to get into SSH.

    5. Open the program you downloaded Putty.

Note: PUTTY is referred to simply as a terminal that allows us to write unix commands directly from the PC. Launch the executable of putty on pc (winscp must be closed), open the configuration window of Putty which entered the IP address of our ipod touch (if you do not know what is the procedure followed above), and clik on open (if a message appears, click Yes and let's move on). At this point you open the window in which to enter commands, we are asked to login which is always "root" and hit enter after typing the password is still "alpine" or "dottie" (when we type we do not see the cursor advance, it is as if we were not writing anything, do not worry, write it and press enter). If we did everything correctly, we're at the # prompt iPod touch and we can type unix commands directly from our pc!

Re: SSH into the iPod Touch

Well according to me it is just a protocol that permits you to access your iPhone or iPod Touch from your desktop PC or MAC and run commands on it (allowing you to copy data to and from your iPhone or iPod without iTunes). It is also used for a lot of things to customize if you know what you're doing. You can use a program like Cyberduck on Mac or WinSCP on Windows and you can view your iPhone or iPod Touch as any other hard drive and view its content and can be much more interesting.
