Without the aid of external software, it seems difficult. Here is a procedure that involves editing the registry but it only works for bmp files visible.

In Windows Explorer (or on the desktop or windows folder), the same icon is used for all files with the same extension.

However, it is possible to replace the icon for each BMP file, display a thumbnail of the image contained in the file.

To do this, you must use the Registry Editor.

    Here's how:

    • Click the Start button and select the Run command ...
    • In the window that appears, type Regedit and confirm by clicking OK
    • In the window of the Registry Editor, open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT branch by double-clicking
    • Find the key Paint.Picture \ DefaultIcon.
    • On the right side of the window of the editor of the registry, double-click the channel (Default)
    • Delete the contents of the box Value data, then type% 1
    • Click the OK button
    • Close the Registry Editor
    • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect

To verify the changes, follow these steps:
    • Display a Windows Explorer or folder containing files BMP
    • Select Large Icons from the View menu
    • Look at the icons for BMP files is a thumbnail of the file is displayed instead of the Paint program icon.

Xentient Thumbnails is a utility for replacing the generic icons of image files with thumbnail icons of the actual image. These thumbnail icons are much easier to recognize and they work everywhere icons are displayed, including on the Desktop, in Open and Save dialogs, and in Windows Explorer. The utility automatically generates thumbnail icons for most popular image types including JPG, JPE, JPEG, JP2, J2K, GIF, PNG, BMP, WBMP, EMF, WMF, PCX, PBM, PGM, PNM, PPM, RAS, TIF, TIFF, and TGA.

i think there are software in the internet like D-Color XP that allows you to have the icon/list/tile views in the desktop, and maybe some with the thumbnail view.
