How to play mkv files

I have Windows Media Player that was inbuilt Windows XP. I have some discs which has .mkv files. I try to open the files with Windows Media Player but it doesn't seem to recognize the mkv file as a valid format. How to play mkv files? Any help? Thanks in advance...

MKF stands for Matroska Video File. Its an open standard Audio/Video container. Its is similar to .avi and .mov files. You will need to install codec to play it on Windows Media player. Try to install Nimo Codec pack. Its free and plays almost all the files from the Windows Media Player. All the best!
