Rename mass files Titles in mac os

Hello everyone,

I have a client with Mac OS 10.4 and OS 9 (soon under Leopard) and a 500 GB Lacie Edmin Gigagit Ethernet (linux filesystem XFS). The problem is that the titles of files and folders can contain accents, special characters (/ - ;....) or securities exceeding the limitation in number of characters. So it is impossible to transfer these data without rename it

Unfortunately, there's a lot of time if all take! It is impossible to format the Edmin to make it HFS +, so I seek a compatible tiger and leopard that would allow me to rename mass file names not compatible with the XFS.

You know an application that would do that? Otherwise you have a solution, or other hack that would allow me to move?

After you are on UNIX and there is the terminal but I understand that people do not liked to use in general. Otherwise a simple command line does the job ....
