Just a note that Linux Mint 6 works with the S10, (including sound, wireless, and video) and just using the Live CD! Wireless was a nice strong connection too. I will probably eventually get a SSD to install Linux

Re: Linux Mint 6 on Lenovo IdeaPad S10

I have installed Mint 6 to my (semi) poor mans SSD (SATA to CF adapter & 16 GB 300X CF card). I had to put the jumper that came with the adapter on both pins and set the mode for SATA from "AHCI" to "compatible" in the bios. Then installed Mint from an external USB CDRom drive. I bought the adapter card online.

The CF card is a Transcend SLC 16 GB 300X card (TS16GCF300). I made sure to disable swap, and I upgraded my RAM to 1 GB with a spare 512 MB DIMM left over from upgrading another laptop.

Sound works, video works (even youtubes), wireless works (I'm posting from it now), SD card slot works (I used it to load my Firefox bookmarks to LinuxMint install), touchpad works, as well as my Logitech Nano VX mouse.
I've installed Wine and a Windows app from an external CDROM drive, and the function keys for screen dimming / brightening, sound volume, print screen, and numlock work. The physical switch to turn WIFI on and off works. CPU frequency scaling works. I installed xawtv and the webcam also works. CPU temps at 40 degree (not sure if that is the right temp). As far as I can tell, everything works great!!

Kind of strange that this netbook, which came with Windows preinstalled works perfectly with LinuxMint "out of the box", while Netbook, which came pre-installed with gOS (Linux) had several hardware devices that did not work in gOS

A little more on LinuxMint 6 and hardware compatibility:

    1. The headphone jack works

    2. Built in front microphone on wrist rest area does not work (for recording using audacity), but microphone plugged into jack does work. I've tried many options in the Alsa mixer panel. There are options for turning on each mic individually, and for "mic boost", but still can't get the built in mic to record sound. It picks up sound. You can blow in the mic and hear it from the speakers.

    3. The video (VGA) out works, but is a little wonky. (Possibly user error. If someone has suggestions to try, I'm all ears.) Used gnome-display-properties. Be sure to set both screens for the same resolution and check the box for "mirror" of both monitors. Leaving monitors to 2 different resolutions causes display problems on both screens. The highest common resolution for my dinky 14 'CRT is 800 x 600. (Would probably work perfectly if I had an external mon itor that supported 1024 X 600.) When disconnecting the external monitor, use the "Detect Displays" button to reset to just using the S10's screen. Only problem I have is that switching back to 1024 X 600 resolution results in a screen with only the cursor showing. Fortunately, this is easy to fix with a ctrl-alt-F3 followed by a ctrl-alt-delete. If any problems after that, rebooting to "failsafe" and selecting option to fix display starts the overwriting of xorg.conf with a backup copy, and you are back in business!

Probably a more elegant way of getting back to normal, but I haven't figured it out yet.
