Is Corsair HX750 ok for i7 920 and SLI GTX285?

Hello there, I want to upgrade my computer and need your help in selecting the correct hardware peripherals. I want to but an Intel i7 920, a 12GB Dominator DDR3 RAM and single EVGA GTX 285 grahic card. Further I want to add an extra GTX 285 to enable SLI. Therefore I want to know if Corsair HX750 is enough for i7 920 and SLI GTX285?. If not then suggest some other PSU's which will support such configuration. Any suggestions about the topic are welcome. Thanks in advance.

The choice of the PSU which you want to use depends on all the devices which are connected to the computer. If there is no other device which is taking up lot of power from the PSU then I think Corsair HX750 will be enough for the configuration which you are using. Although if there are lot of devices which are taking up power from the PSU then the PSU will not be able to provide enough power to all the devices, resulting in the computer not working properly.

Before selecting the power supply unit for the computer, check power ratings of all the devices which you are going to connect to the computer. After checking all the ratings of the devices, select the power supply unit which satisfies the power requirements of all the devices. If the power supply unit is not able to fulfill the power requirements of the devices then it will lead to fluctuation in the power which may also damage the peripheral. Hence be very careful while selecting the power supply unit of the computer.

I think Corsair HX750 will not be enough for the configuration which you are trying to upgrade to. According to me Corsair HX 750 can support i7 920 and a single GTX card but for enabling SLI and adding a second graphic card will not be supported by the PSU. The maximum output which you may get will about 30 to 40%. Hence it is better to select a PSU with higher wattage rating, so that you will not face any problems while upgrading the computer again.

I was not sure about the choice of the PSU and hence had asked the question. As you say that the PSU will not be enough for the SLI mode with an extra graphic card, I would like to know which power supply unit to add to the computer to avoid such problems. Will adding an ATI card instead of GTX card decrease the power wattage level that is required? Please suggest.

No adding an ATI graphic card instead of the GTX card will not help in reducing the power wattage level required, infact you will have enable crossfire feature on the ATI card instead of SLI mode. According to me you should use a Corsair HX850 or Corsair HX 1000 power supply units which will be more than the current power ratings of the computer. Adding the above power supply unit will ensure that the any number of devices can be added to the computer later, without need for upgradation of the Power supply unit.
