What type of hard drive you choose?

    Hello,

I'm about to buy a DD external (Network drive.) but I do not know which option to choose: I intend to buy a HD with a capacity of 320 to 500 GB. No precise budget.

But I have some questions about this type of HD:

    • What are the differences between the models (except the ability)?
    • The HD included in these products are of quality?
    • But what kind HD choose (SATA or IDE?)
    • What is the difference between these two "format"?
    • What brands to trust?

I wish very much that you can help me! Thank you in advance!

Conceptually, SATA is a 'wire replacement' for the older AT Attachment standard (ATA). Serial ATA host-adapters and devices communicate via a high-speed serial cable.

SATA offers several compelling advantages over the older parallel ATA interface: reduced cable-bulk and cost (8 pins vs 80 pins), faster and more efficient data transfer, and the ability to remove or add devices while operating (hot swapping).

As of 2009, SATA has all but replaced the legacy ATA (retroactively renamed Parallel ATA or PATA, also known as IDE or EIDE) in all shipping consumer PCs. (PATA remains dominant in industrial and embedded applications dependent on CompactFlash storage.)

    Hi,

For the most reliable brands, you seagate, hitachi, western digital. For a network drive, depending on its installation if it is a DD to take it or a single PC take all, I think, an external drive with USB standard. According to what is provided software I doubt they are actually useful, so any or mounted in a box or not.
