Youtube videos/sound play in slow motion

[Flycaster]

Dell Dimension 4600, Pentium 4, Windows XP SP2, plenty of RAM, Geforce
FX5200 (updated drivers).

Youtube and iTunes play well when computer is first booted up. But if I
try to play them, let's say after the computer has been in use for and
hour or so, then everything (sound and video) is in slow motion.
Otherwise, everything else on the computer functions quite fast at all
times. This has been going on for about 6 months and nothing I try
seems to help, maybe one of you guys/gals can?

Youtube and iTunes might be the most CPU intensive
program you run. If so:
Something is prolly eating or not releasing your system
resources.

Suspect any legacy (old) programs you run first.
(Also could be a virus.)

To find out, you might try monitoring the Win Task Monitor
[press Alt Ctrl Del] and switch between&watch Processes and
Performance tabs. (...or shut down all running programs one
at a time.)

If that's no help, you might try to find a system monitor
that gives a more truthful reading of CPU usage, that
one lies big-time. (Can anybody suggest one?) Also keep
an eye on yer "phone line" for virus com usage etc. A
good sysmon should chart that too.

All resources are fine while having this slo-mo problem. Remember I
said that all this stuff used to work just fine and then all-of-a-sudden
slo-mo entered into the scene. Interestingly, when the computer is
freshly booted, every thing works (iTunes, youtube, windows media.
winamp), but after an hour or so, the slo-mo sets in (with no excessive
use of CPU resources). I guess it could be a virus, but I haven't
detected one. And, perhaps something is wrong with the motherboard or
the Nvidia GeForce card???

I'm guessing as you *use* it, and not if it just sits idle
"an hour or so".

That's the typical low resources symptom of a resource hog that I
describe.

Virus not probable, in my best guess.

Does not sound like hardware.
Reboot would not fix a hot board or chip.
Sounds like a resource hog.

One such hog could be an extremely fragged disk.
Another is a memory leak.
Another are other sloppy programs of many kinds,
or very old programs.
....and viruses/Trogans.

All very good suggestions, thanks. However, I routinely virus scan and
routinely defrag my disk (even though it rarely needs defragging).
Cache and temp files are well controlled, too. Furthermore, when the
slo-mo problem occurs, I run Process Explorer and find no excessive use
of resources. Quite a problem, eh?

Sounds like the CPU is overheating to me... how old is your computer, what
is it, and when's the last time you cleaned the heatsink?

Modern computers will slow down the CPU when it gets too hot. It can cause
some very interesting and mysterious problems if what you're doing requires
more power than the CPU have at lower speeds. Slow-motion movie play is one
of the things that indicate the CPU is running at lower speeds.

Unless you have a hardware monitor running, you will not get any
notification that the CPU is overheating and is slowing down to cool off.

CPU overheating and slowing down...now that sounds like a possibility.
I do routinely clean the interior of my computer and the heat sink,
itself. But I haven't done in in about 2 months. I think I'll google
for a free app that with monitor my CPU's functioning. Thanks for the tip.

[Flycaster]

Just downloaded a monitoring program. It's reading a HDo of 130F and
says that no fans are running. Could you interpret this?
