Windows XP does not recognize MyBook-Essential Edition usb

I had bought a new My Book Essential Hard drive. It has a USB 2.0 support. I had connected the same to my pc and it is not able to detect it. I am getting a new hardware found icon on the task bar but there is nothing in My Computer. I think the drive is working fine but there is some problem with my pc. The same hard drive works really well on my office pc. There is no issue at all. Can anyone provide me any help on this.

Did you checked any other usb drive. USB devices are mostly plug and play and they do not really need any kind of driver support. You can just plug them and it comes in my computer. Right click on My Computer > Manage > Device Manager and see what you get in that. Does the drive is listed in that. You will have to re-install the same through that and then test again. I am sure it will work fine.

The issue appear when your OS fails to assign any drive letter to the hard drive. You can go in Disk Management and fix the problem. Just right click on My Computer > Properties > Disk Management. In that look for the connected USB drive. Right click on it and click on change driver letter. That's all. Once you assign the drive letter it will be visible inside My Computer and you can move or copy data in it.
