Windows Product Activation Error 0x80040017

I had to restart my computer because of some updates but after selecting user and loading profiles I got "Windows Product Activation" with a message stating that "A problem is preventing windows accurately checking the license for the computer Error Code 0x80040017." I am able to start the computer in SAfe mode but get the same issue when I boot in safe mode with network. Can anyone please help. Thanks.

This problem may occur if a file that the Windows Product Activation requires is damaged or missing. This condition may be related to one or both of the following conditions:

1. A third-party backup utility or an antivirus program interferes with the installation of Windows XP.
2. A file that Windows Product Activation requires is manually modified.

There is no direct solution for this problem. You have to go ahead with a repair setup. You can then try back for activation process. This issue usually occur on pirated windows. Newly installed updates detect your system and are able to give you that notification. But if you have a licensed copy of Windows then you can tyry contacting Microsoft for the problem. You will surely get the solution for it. Try system restore also before going ahead with repair setup.

I am giving you a link below that has more detailed information on your problem. The issue occur due to two things. First if there is some kind of issue with Windows XP security provider or if the driver letter is changed recently. So you have to restore the old settings back so that can stop that error. There are few registry changes mentioned in below link which you have to apply and try out. This might resolve the problem.
