event id 26 applicaton popup error

since i did the microsoft updates on 7/10 i get a popup error message when
closing ie6 the message is : IEXPLORE.EXE : The instruction at "0x7e1f9b17"
referenced memory at "0x7dc48960". The memory could not be "read" click to
terminate. when i checked the event id's under system i found this message
it says the source is application popup and event id 26 Application popup:

did spybot and adware and also ran full scan on norton. found nothing. any
help would be appreciated.

Hi laurie,

Disable Add-ons and see if this occurs.

How to manage Internet Explorer add-ons in Windows XP Service Pack 2

If you have IE7 installed then start IE7 without Addons.

Internet Explorer 7 may exit immediately when it includes an add-on and
you start it in Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928426

If the problem does not occur when add-ons are disabled then you have
to find out which add-on is causing this to happen to Interent
Explorer. Enable one add-on then check if Internet Explorer crashes.
Repeat until you find the culprit.

If the problem still occurs when you have disabled the add-ons then
uninstall the update using the Add/Remove Programs and see if Internet
Explorer crashes.

NOTE: You may need to enable "Show hiiden updates" at the top of the
Add/Remove Programs windows to see the Windows Update entry.

the problem only seems to be when i am at myspace i did check the updates i
installed they had to do mostly with microsoft.net. i checkd google and
yahoo and others are having the problem since 7/4 so i wonder if this could
be like the problem some had where after updating we got a message that the
realtek driver couldn't be loaded due to the memory being allocated to
something else.

and i am using ie6 but debating if i should upgrade to 7 as i read that the
problem stopped then.

Laurie, William -- posting this in the spirit of sharing information. William, I do not need assistance with this, at least not yet. I just wanted to confirm for you that I am currently experiencing the same error in IE6, and I too use MySpace and Spybot. I also use AVG Free anti-virus. I am quite confident that there is no malware infestation currently. I do not plan to install IE7.

Problem is intermittent -- happens when closing IE6 browser, but not always reproducible
Problem started happening recently, within last 2 months
Windows updates are current within 30 days, except for the optional upgrades to IE and WMP, which are at version 6 and 10, respectively, and are current on security patches.
I have not yet triaged problem, but I do know the user does use MySpace in IE6 sometimes.
Firefox 2 and Opera 9.1 are also installed and neither of them terminate abnormally as IE6 does.

get the same message on it when going to myspace. so it is a problem with a
microsoft update.

I did some more testing -- again just sharing what I found

steps to reproduce
launch IE (6)
navigate to http://www.myspace.com
enter credentials and login
click on the 'x' to close IE after myspace 'home' screen finishes loading

time to clear IE cache and retest...

doh! I disabled this in IE -- off to control panel / internet options -- and will retest with this restriction disabled...
unable to locate configuration setting to enable/disable tools/options from within IE
after some head scratching, i remembered i used spybot for this restriction (tools / ie tweaks), and used spybot to undo the restriction.

temporary internet files -- delete files -- delete all offline content
retest, same error


prior to closing IE I saved page to c:\temp\mysptest.html
launch IE again (default home page is 'about:blank', set to work offline
open c:\temp\mysptest.html by dragging it from windows explorer and dropping it in the IE browser window
(3 times) warning dialog produced: web page unavailable while offline. clicked 'stay offline'
close IE window by clicking on red 'x', IE closes gracefully, no error.

reopened c:\temp\mysptest.html with IE set to work offline
(3 times) warning dialog produced: web page unavailable while offline. clicked 'stay offline'
toggled 'work offline' so the the browser could connect to the internet, and immediately closed IE, no error.

(suggests issue not reproducible with locally saved web page, try different approach...)

with myspace profile home page open, view source, save as c:\temp\02_source.html
source code does not contain object tags, embed tags, nor does it contain .swf anywhere in the source code
open IE and open c:\temp\02_source.html and then close IE, error is reproduced

i have found a way to consistently reproduce the error, but do not yet know if it caused by inappropriate myspace code, or some broader bug in IE. Technically speaking, I would consider it an IE bug because a program should produce a proper error message and terminate gracefully rather than crash and terminate abnormally, as is the case here. The issue is not reproducible in Firefox 2 or Opera 9.1 as mentioned earlier. I can debug basic html, but the myspace stuff is out of my league. I'll leave this issue for someone with css/javascript debugging skills.
fwiw, myspace changes their backend html rendering policies often and this issue may disappear with the next myspace code update.
