Win XP Pro : Can't add printers (operation could not be completed)

I’m having a Windows XP desktop. I was using my HP printer with this system using XP built-in drivers. It was working fine since past 2 months but yesterday suddenly I found that printer was removed from my control panel. When I tried adding the printer again it gave me an error saying “Print spooler service is not running. The operation could not be completed.”

So I went to services and found that it was already set to Automatic. Still I manually started Print Spooler (net start spooler). I closed this applet and went to add printer wizard. But still it gives me error saying "Operation could not be completed"
Any idea what is wrong? Please provide me some working solution for the same.

Try going to c:\windows\inf and deleted the printupg.PNF file.
