    print jobs go poof

    Hey all,
Corporate environment, There are some webpages that we have here in our intranet and also some internet pages that we have a weird issue with printing. It is random and happens more times than not but not all the time.

When someone is in IE8 and prints the icon shows up at the bottom of the IE window but never makes it to the print queue and the icon in IE just stays. It also at times locks up IE. The jobs never show up in the windows printer queue.

Now we have done the following,
    Reloaded the windows profile.
    Tried another machine
Swapped out her machine with a new reimaged machine.
    Tried different printers,
    reloading the drivers
Tried a citrix IE session (better but still does it maybe 10% of the time it did before.

    This has boggled us,

You mean to say the icons are not getting displayed in the print out, is this what you are trying to say? Do you get any kind of error while printing or something?

Do reply to the few questions that i have asked and also for more reference you can have a look at this thread. You might get more information there.

    No errors, just hangs...

The user will right click on the website and choose print, In the bottom right of the IE session window there is a menu section where it has the zoom and internet security settings. Just to the left are boxes. When you choose to print it will display a printer icon (just like the one that shows up in the systray).

Normally it will pop up and go away then in the systray the same icon will pop up and go away as the print queue is processed.

In this case, the icon stays in the IE window and never makes it to the windows print queue in the systray.

At times this will also lock up the browser. The icon will stay on the bottom section of the IE8 window until closed.

    Now here is the kicker,
    • IE6 works fine, but not an option to go back to, other functions in the website wont work in IE6 now.

    • We have tried reloading the windows profile

    • We have swapped machines.

    • Tried print preview, it shows the page but more of a screenshot. If it is more than whats on the screen it wont print it.

    • There are no other problems with printing.

    • We have also tried local and network printers, HP and Lexmark.
      Updated drivers.

I dont know but it seems to get hung up from leaving the application to the print queue. Isn't this where the GDI rendering engine comes into place? Can it get hung up there for some jobs but not others? Are there temp folder locations that might cause this issue?

Can you first try to remove any other pending print jobs until you are left with just the problem ones. Your spool directory will be located at

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRINTERS

and will now contain files like these:

    FP00003
    FP00003.SHD

Tow files will be there for each remaining print job. Just delete these and reboot. Your print queue will now be cleared.

    That is clear.
    Thanks for the input.
Checked again, Issue still occurs. Verified again and folder is clear.
