Am sorry if this question has been asked earlier (I tried to search but dint found). My problem is I’m trying to move my “Documents and Settings" from C:\ to D:\. I know it is possible because am doing this with the help of steps mentioned in this Microsoft Article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314843/en-us . But once I move the same and reboot the system again it gets back to C:\Documents and Settings. Please help me moving it permanently to D:\.

I know a guy did this successfully using Tweak UI. It has very simple user interface too. You just need to launch it, click on “My Computer/Special Folders” and select the stuff you want to move. Click Change Location and done. Alternatively you can also try out the following:
- Open registry editor by typing regedit.exe in Start > Run.
- Navigate to the following location:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
- here you will find number of profiles that is associated with user name that you will find under C:\Documents and Settings.
- you need to find out your user profile by clicking each PROFILE key entry
- Now you need to use RegEdit or any such program to clone registry and edit the profile path associated with your user account and CHANGE the path to where you want to move your settings to.
- For example C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME to “D:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME”.
- Once done, save this new path value in the registry editing program.
- Now export the whole profile key that contains this value. You will be prompted for a file name to save the exported information to. Pick a location on your hard disk (not on the C drive) and export the key. When you finish the export and look at the output file, it should look something like this (note that exported filename locations inside the registry always represent a single “\” character with two “\\” characters)

Unfortunately that dint working for me, though thanks a lot for your help buddy. Actually I don’t want to move Documents and Settings for just my user account, I want it to move entirely to D:\. I am sure it can be done regarding
to the MS KB article 314843

Alrite, I got it. Try out the following steps for the same:
- Launch Windows Explorer, go to D drive and create a new folder named Documents and Settings.
- Now create a new user account and name it as mover. Assign it all Administrative access. Once create log from your existing account and login with the newly created username.
- Now go to C:\Documents and Settings, press Ctrl+A, copy entire files and folders and paste them to D:\ Documents and Settings. (It’s the folder you created before logging off)
- Remember not copy few files such as LocalService, NetworkService, and Mover folders.
- Now go to Start > RUN > type regedit.exe, Press Enter.
- Find & Replace all instances of "\Documents and Settings\", including:
- \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Documents and Settings\
- %SystemRoot%\Documents and Settings\
- %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\
- C:\Docume~1\
- Now turn off the system, wait for a minute or two and turn on again. Login with the newly created Remove username and password.
- Again go to the registry and replace the files we did in step above.
- Now log off and login with your normal user account. Now try to rename the Documents and Settings folder under C:\. If you are able to rename it than you are done what you wanted to do.

I am trying to accomplish this task on a newly configured Win 2003 Server using X64. This is going into production as a Terminal Server. I have tried the steps listed in this thread for moving Docs and Settings from C:\ to D:\. SEVERAL TIMES. No matter what upon reboot all registry changes revert back to c:\documents and settings.
What am I doing wrong here.

I don't know, but I found the above summary missed out a few details. Try the following:
MOVING THE '\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\' FOLDER TO ANOTHER DRIVE
The following is based on KB236621 but revised for XP.
1. Open Explorer.
2. Create a folder 'D:\Documents and Settings'.
3. Create a profile with administrative permission and
call it "Mover".
4. Logoff then logon to the "Mover" account.
5. Copy all the folders inside 'C:\Documents and Settings\'
(except the 'LocalService', 'NetworkService', and 'Mover'
folders) to 'D:\Documents and Settings\'. (The LocalService and
NetworkService folders will be re-created automatically.)
6. Open regedit (Start > Run > regedit)
Select Edit > Find.
Make sure 'Keys', 'Values' and 'Data' are selected and 'Match whole string only' is deselected.
Find all instances of the following and change/rename to D:\Documents and Settings\
- C:\Documents and Settings\
- \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Documents and Settings\
- %SystemRoot%\Documents and Settings\
- %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\
Also find & replace all C:\Docume~1\ to D:\Docume~1\
Before exiting, do a search for \Documents and Settings\ to check if there are any others.
Remember to click on 'My Computer' before each new search to start searching from the top.
7. Restart the computer.
8. Logon to the 'Mover' account.
9. Repeat step 6.
10. Restart and logon to your original account.
11. Test by renaming the '\Documents and Settings\' folder
in drive C. If you can rename it then it worked!
12. If everything is OK, then you can delete the 'Mover'
account that you created before.
