After installation XP SP3 local file acces is very slow

Monday 01.09.2008 is installed SP3 on my Notebook. The local File Access is
    now very slow.

    Example:
    - in the Windows Explorer i highlight the file, right mouse button, want to
see the file property, have to wait 3-4 Seconds till the Popup Menu shows up
    - in the Windows Explorer i highlight the file, a 10 kb file, press CTRL+C
for Copy paste and have to wait wait 3-4 Seconds
    - doubleclick on a Word Dokument 2-3Mb and i have to wait
    - Opening Eventlog locally and i have to wait till it shows up

last night i run the Defragmentation Tool, but the file access is still very
    slow.

On Friday 29.08 (XP SP2) the Notebook had no problem, fast file access on
    the Notebook.

    Here the Notebook specs
    DELL M 65
2 Gb Ram, free Ram 1.3 Gb
100 Gb Harddrive, free space 30 Gb

    Any advice is very appreciated

    Regards
    Paolo

    notebooks are unique
    machines and some
    makers are not advising
    to install sp3.

    you might to uninstall it
    and return to a functional
    state.

or you might want to ask
    the tech's at the homesite
    for your machine for advice.

Re: After installation XP SP3 local file acces is very slow

    Hi db

thanks for answer. But there must be a reason why the local Disk Access is
slow after the Installation of SP3. The Access on Network Drives is not
affected. It's as fast as it was before the installation of SP3.

    Any other ideas ?

Re: After installation XP SP3 local file acces is very slow

    well, the maker for my
    notebook advised me not
to install sp3 and in doing
    so alleviated time and
    aggravation with resolving
    a dysfunctional machine.

i can provide a couple of
    suggestions:

    1) there was a posting on
a similar issue and the user
    eventually resolved a problem
    by reinstalling a proprietary
    file.

    so perhaps, you simply have
to reinstall some of your files
    from the notebooks' homesite.

    2) you may refer this headache
    to the sp3 team:

checked the Homepage of Dell and i did not find an advise that this Notebook
    is not compatible with SP3.
your link to refer to the Sp3 Team is a good idea, i will do this.

Re: After installation XP SP3 local file acces is very slow

yesterday i used processmonitor (sysinternals) to take a look if there is a
process that delay's the access on the local disk. so i find out that
rtvscan (Norton Antivirus) was activated every 2 seconds, creating a log
file, did something approx. 1-2 seconds and closed the log file. This
    procedure was continuous.
So i decided to run a full scan over night on the local Harddisk with the
    Norton Antivirus.

And this solved the problem. Now the access on the local disk drive is as
fast as it was before the installation of the SP3.

    So problem is solved.

    Thank you for help db
