Having a very short query. I used to check my XP system files by running sfc /scannow in the Start > Run.
I just wanted to know if it can be done in Vista as well ? Does it works here ?
Thanks

Yeah, offcourse you can do that in Vista as well. That is the System File Checker and Microsoft has kept it alive in Vista as well and probably will be in next windows versions also. In order to run the same in vista, Go to Start menu, in the search filed type CMD. Right click the result and click Run as Admin. That’s it. You got the command prompt now. Type sfc /scannow and the process will start.
Hey guys, I need some similar kind of help for Vista Ultimate. From last 2 days it is not able to connect to internet. Tried many things but nothing help. I guess there is something wrong with any of system files or due to registry corruption. As a workaround I ran "Chkdsk" but it says filesystem is fine. Later somebody told me to run system file checker (sfc /scannow), I tried running the same but it refuses to run. It gives me the following error:
"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
Even safe mode cannot do anything. Any help or working fix for the same ?
Well I saw you have mentioned few things you tried, but let me list all things I would have done if was getting the same problem:
- Start by running command prompt from an elevated prompt. Type CHKDSK /F /R and press Enter. You will be prompted for permission with some message, simply click Yes. This will make chkdsk run on the next bootup.
- Insert your Vista installation DVD and repair your system.
- If sfc /scannow is still not running than you should try performing perform an inplace Vista "upgrade" which would rewrite original files over existing ones and then see if sfc works.
Is the upgrade free of cost ? I mean I already paid for getting Vista Ultimate why should I go again for upgraded version and pay them more.
Can this problem be fixed by re-installing the existing vista again ?
Hi
When SFC /scannow gives the reply of "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" I use this:
C:\>sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
It works in most cases.
Good luck
