Vista Home Basic cannot connect to a shared XP HP 1000 printer

I am running Windows XP with service pack 3 will all the latest updates on my computer. There is an HP Deskjet 1000 Printer with me which is shared and connected to the XP PC. If I am trying to add a printer on a Vista computer then the Add printer is able to see the printer but when I try to select the printer then Vista will give me an error message that says "Cannot connect to printer: access denied". I have installed AVG internet security on both the machines and configured for "computers in domain". I have disabled the AVG firewall on both the computers as well but that doesnt seem to work. I dont have an issue if I connecting to another Vista computer as it is able to detect the printer and connects to its shared printer. Can anyone give me some hint on how to fix this thing? Thanks

Did you try to run the Windows XP's file and printer sharing wizard, so that it will know something that it has to share with the Vista machine.

You might want to add the printer as local first and then remap it as network printer and it will be able to help you out. Try to add a local printer on Vista and remap it to a network printer, please following these steps:

    1. First of all you need to run Printers by typing print or open the Control Panel > Hardware and Sounds.
    2. After that click Add a printer.
    3. Then you have to choose Add a local printer
    4. While choosing to add a printer port, select LPT#. In most cases, LTP1 should be fine.
    5. After that follow the instruction to complete the installation.
    6. You have to know right click on the printer you just added, then choose the Properties and then choose Ports > Add Port > New Port. Enter a port name, for example \\servername\printername.
    7. Now you have to check the port you just created, for example, 192.168.10.99.
