Local access only - NO internet acces on Vista Ultimate

Recently I upgraded one of my XP running desktop to Windows Vista Ultimate. I connected it to my home network with other computers. It can see all other PCs (I tried both Private as well as Public network), no problem. But there is no Internet access on this pc. I don’t know what could be the reason, all settings appear fine, but there is something blocking my internet access., Vista shows “Local access only.”

Hoping some help from you guys.

Hello GanarDan, are you able to ping any Public IP such as uahoo.com? To ping a public IP, open Command Prompt, type ping public ip and then press Enter. For example, C:\Documents and Settings\blin>ping 4.2.2.1

Meanwhile you can also go through these discussion with the same issue and solutions, hope anyone of them will surely help you out:

Re: Local access only - NO internet acces on Vista Ultimate

It took me 4 hours to resolve this problem with my sprint broadband card. The problem turned out to be with the workgroup setting in the system settings. When I installed vista I chose a workgroup. So, when I tried to connect to the internet it was looking for that workgroup (resulting in 'local only' status). So to resolve the problem I went to my system settings and removed the workgroup and chose that this computer was for home use and not office network. When I rebooted the system I immediately noticed the internet icon in the windows toolbar.

Hope this helps all of you who have had this same problem.

    Good Luck.

I encountered the same problem on my Laptop with a Vista OS.
I played a few tricks on the Tools - Internet Options and it finally did the trick.
To resolve this, click Tools (press Alt + T), Internet Options - Advanced Settings.
Click the Restore Advanced Settings button and voila... Internet ready..
