File Sharing Vista Home Basic & XP

I have a Vista laptop and a Windows XP on a desktop computer which is not able to see each other properly. On the XP with service pack 3 I have followed the directions that I have found online for networking both the machines. These both machines are connected using wireless. I am able to ping the computer name but cannot ping the ip address. I just want to share files and a printer with laptop, so can anyone tell me a method on how to do this? Thanks

The default workgroup name in Windows Vista has been changed to WORKGROUP. In Windows® XP Home Edition, the default workgroup name is MSHOME. If you upgrade a computer running Windows XP Home Edition to Windows Vista, it will keep its existing workgroup name. However, new computers with Windows Vista can have a different workgroup name than the other computers on your network. With different workgroups, it takes more time and effort to view all of the computers on the network. So, to solve your issue, follow the steps given on this website - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx

If you're still having trouble sharing files or a printer on a network, make sure Windows Firewall is not blocking File and Printer Sharing. Here's how:

    1. Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Windows Firewall.
    2. Click Allow a program through Windows Firewall. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    3. In the Program or port list, make sure the File and Printer Sharing check box is selected, and then click OK.
