Windows XP service pack 3 failed to install

Windows XP service pack 3 downloaded, checked space and was installing files,
then popped up an error message that the changes were not accepted and the
only option was to back out of the entire installtion. Now what?

RE: Windows XP service pack 3 failed to install

OK. I checked the windowsupdate.log (no space) under c:\windows. From what I
could figure out, it lost its internet connection. The machine in question is
connected wirelessly to the machine connected to the router. I updated both
at the same time; the wired machine is faster and when it rebooted after the
update it lost its IP with the cable modem (because of the update?). I've
restarted everything and I'm trying again.

You can download the entire SP3 package and *save* it from here:

" Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3). This support for SP3 is
valid until April 14, 2009. For more information about this policy,
visit the Windows XP Support Lifecycle page located at
    http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223. Availability of chat or
e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. For
customers residing in North America or Canada, chat and e-mail support
    is available.

Some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge. "

Or, you can attempt to troubleshoot why SP3 did not install. This page
shows which logs you can check and their locations:
    http://winhlp.com/node/125#Cannot_in...Service_Pack_2

The logs are the same for both SP2 and SP3.
Suggest you try downloading the entire SP3 package, *save* it, and then
    read these articles :

RE: Windows XP service pack 3 failed to install

Referring to the message below (OK I know it is an OLD message! But this IS
pertinent!) I had exactly the same happen BUT it is SP3 TRYING to install
that loses the internet connection!!! I was two days with any connection as
the installation changes the DNS settings I belkieve! If you run a "Network
Diagnostics" the problem will show itself!
ALL MY wireless services had been diabled? And ALL were live before I tried
    to download SP3!

I am now trying to make a CD and will try from that. BUT I think that it is
the actual download whioch is causing the problem. Another anomaly which I
found was that the "System Restore" was removed! So unable to roll back to
before the install?? Sorry but what is THAT all about??

    Good luck all!

    Regards

The installation of SP3 does not change your DNS settings.

Verify you have the latest network device drivers downloaded and installed
from yor network device manufacturer and if you have any third party
firewall installed - please - uninstall it and use the built-in Windows XP
    firewall.

Re: Windows XP service pack 3 failed to install

Why have you waited so long to install SP3? [Free unlimited installation and
compatibility support for WinXP SP3 was available from 14 April 2008 thru
May 2009. Such support will cost you US$59 per incident now.]

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed SP3?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
    it)?

Device Manager and Network Connections may be blank after you install

A Windows XP SP3-based computer loses wireless connectivity when it resumes
