IDT Audio IDT High Definition Audio CODEC took out my audio

I'm using Vista Home Premium and just installed the IDT Audio IDT High
Definition Audio CODEC update today. After rebooting I have no playback
devices. I can not Skype, can not play back CDs or listen to the internet
    radio.

In addition, when I look at installed updates to remove an update, this
particular one is not listed. Suggestions?

    Hi there,

Never take drivers from windows update unless they are intended for
    Microsoft hardware.

If an updated driver is needed because the hardware does not work proper go
to the manufacturers website to look for an updated driver.

If it ain't broke: do not try to"FIX" it.

If you did take the optional drivers from windows update try booting last
known good configuration, rolling back on the driver or use system restore
    or
do a windows repair installation or restore from the system backup you
    hopefully made.

For the record, not all experts agree with this advice. (In particular
Microsoft obviously doesn't or they wouldn't be distributing the drivers this
    way in the first place!)

However, the same advice applies as with any other updates - make sure you're
    backed up first.

I would argue that many manufacturers are clueless about writing drivers for MS operating systems, and hence the MS-written drivers (when they exist, typically only for older components) are likely to be preferable.

I am having the same problem but I have tried to restore back to
several restore points and I get an error saying that it was not
restored. What else can I do? Jim

Try this ... I'm certainly not an expert, but if this works, let me know -
reboot your computer but first unplug your speakers and anything in your
headphone output. Reboot again and plug everything back in. It's possible
Windows might 'see' the items on the second attempt.

I'm back to normal but I may try this myself (after first creating a new
    Restore point).

I, too, was having a problem installing Vista SP1 on my Gateway CX210X laptop
(preinstalled with Vista Ultimate one year ago). Gateway didn't have an
updated driver, and SigmaTel wasn't making new ones, so I'd deleted the
SigmaTel Driver (from Gateway) in order to install Vista SP1 about a month
ago. Upon restart, Microsoft Update installed an IDT High Definition Audio
CODEC. Voila, I could now install Vista SP1.

Installed some other updates this afternoon, among them the MS Udate
"Optional" IDT High Definition Audio CODEC software update released in
September, 2007. The install gave me the "no audio devices installed"
    message upon restart.

Unlike some other posts in this thread, I was able to "roll-back" the driver
successfully, and have the older IDT High Definition Audio CODEC back.

Re: IDT Audio IDT High Definition Audio CODEC took out my audio

Hi, one day i was doing updates for my computer (i have an Acer and i'
using vista) and i think it called for a vista update. Once i update
it, i restarted my computer and i found a little sound icon with a re
"x" on it saying: "no audio output is installed". I don't know why i
happened. I researched what i would do on google. One webpage said:
go to control panel>device manager>find the sound card by clicking o
the plus next to Sound, Video and Game controllers. You should se
something that has a brand name with integrated audio>click on it>driv
    tab>roll back drive
I did this. It said once you "roll back the driver" that the soun
should start working again. But unfortunatly when i went to the Driv
tab, it would NOT let me click on "roll back driver". i don't know why
And now i do not now how to solve this problem, and get my sound back o
    my compter.

By the way, it says my sound is a "IDH High Definition Audio CODEC"

Does anyone know how to fix this? Your help is much appreiciated
    Thanks

My computer is an Apple, but I run Vista via Bootcamp. The recent "IDT High
Definition Audio CODEC" update disabled my sound card in Vista, and now -
even though I've managed to get the system to revert to the previous SigmaTel
drivers, the sound card still isn't working.

    I'm very, very, very unimpressed.

Windows Update should not offer users the option to install updates that are
incompatible with their hardware. With Apples running Bootcamp, this should
be especially easy for Microsoft to avoid, because the level of
standardisation is high, and so is the user base.

I actually bought Vista because it was the only OS that was compatible with
certain audio software I use (aside from XP, which was originally intended to
have been phased out by now).

Also, the latest Apple Bootcamp update just failed to install. No Apple
updates have previously failed to install. I am pretty sure that this is
because of the sound card driver problem.

So now I can't do my work, and I can't patch my other drivers either. Thanks
    a bunch, MS.

    Macbook 2.13GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD
Windows Vista Home Premium via Leopard Bootcamp

I shuuld have emphasised REMOVE drivers, system restore or driver rollback
wont fix this one .Can i send IDT the bill for my time fixing their mess?

Had the same problem on my Dell desktop. Solution was to uninstall the new
sound driver Microsoft Update installed and then I went to Dell's site and
downloaded their July 2007 SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC driver and
    everything worked just fine again.

Same happened to me when did windows live update after installing sp3. I fixed by going to device manager and uninstalling IDT Audio Codec under the Sound Audio section.
Rebooted and plug-n-play found new (old) audio hardware and asked to install. I followed thru on the internet search for IDT driver and installed. This fixed my "no audio" volume problem.

Additional difference was the pop-up of a control panel of IDT Audio at Boot Up after sucessful reinstall of driver. Controls IDT audio setting icon in systray now too at boot. Now I just need to get rid of the annoying flash control screen at boot.

IDT audio appears to be working fine now as replacement for original Sigmatel? audio drivers.

Sigma Tel HD Audio Codec on Inspiron 1501 running XP - No sound SO

I just experienced the same problem with using the updated audio driver and
then having no sound or audio device. After a whole week of trying to find
the source of constant bluescreen crashes running Vista I finally gave in and
replaced Vista with XP professional. Did all updates including SP3 and
everything went perfectly until I tried to install the audio driver I had
gotten off the Dell site meant for my laptop running XP (R171789 -12/4/07)
It was the only one listed so I figured it had to be the right one. Well as
soon as I installed it I knew something was wrong because the system crashed
and Device Status said to reinstall the drivers for this device (code 18) --
no audio device, and no sound at all. I tried several times to reinstall and
it came up with things that didn't make sense, like needing a driver
stacapi.dll, but not accepting it even though I directed it right to it in
the WDM folder! I finally uninstalled the Sigma Tel entry in device manager
but add/remove programs would not let me uninstall the Sigma Tel
    program....error code 5001 - >setupDLL/setupDLL.cpp(2739) PAPP: SigmaTel
    Pvendor: Sigma Tel PGUID: long
    numbers/letters...$10.1.0.238@windowsXPservicepack3(2600) IE.0.6000.

Thank goodness I found this exact problem mentioned here. While the "found
new hardware" search never found a suitable driver - I figured I needed to
find a previous one to the one on the Dell site so that made me go back to
the Dell site and look again. I saw a link that said "other versions" which
is where I found an older Sigma Tel driver from 5/10/07 (says 11/2/06 and is
    R134779).

I was worried that since I wasn't able to uninstall the bad one that the new
one wouldn't install right so I did something out of desperation that I
normally would never think of doing----I DELETED the Sigma Tel software entry
right out of Programs in Windows exporer! I really did not think it would
work at that point BUT IT DID!! I installed the older driver and SOUND IS
BACK and all entries are as they should be.

Thanks to all who take the time to help others on these forums!

Hi queenstowngreg. Try the "SIGMATEL_STAC-92XX-C-Major-H_A06_R182475.exe" package from the Dell support site released on May 19. It has version
6.10.0.5866 of the IDT/Sigmatel audio drivers for Vista SP1 and should work
on your Dell XPS 420 desktop computer.

Also check out MS KB article 948481 on resolving some sound problems in
    Vista SP1:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=948481

My audio crashed after windows up-date. Had to use driver (from original
CD) that came with my computer. As in the other post's rolling back driver
    did not work.

Same problem as above. Except it was on a Gateway laptop. After updating to SP 3 on XP the sound was gone along with the speaker icon on the task bar.
I went to Gateway's website and found an earlier version of the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC driver and downloaded it and installed it. The problem was solved. Hope this helps other. I know it helped me. Thanks.
