windows updates at shutdown never install

I have a custom built gaming machine with a core 2 duo running win xp pro sp
    2. It is running fine (obviously ;) ) but the problem is the windows updates
have 4 updates to install on shutdown. When i shutdown to install these
updates it stays at the installing screen forever (max time i have left it is
48hours) and never installs the updates. I would like to know how i can
cancel these updates on shutdown. I have already installed all the updates my
computer needs manually as i prefer to know what updates are going into my
machine. I would like to know what these supposed 4 updates are and how to
install or not cancel their installation.

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
    AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!
