    Corrupted Windows Update

    Due to a crash I had to recover my Windows XP.
    Since then WindowsUpdate finds and downloads updates properly but cannot
    install them. All are rejected with the following errors:

    I tried to follow note 916259, but when I try to re-install WindowsUpdate
    (WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe), it keeps telling me that latest version is
    already installed.

    How can I force re-installation of WindowsUpdate ?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Try the following:-

    Click Start, select run and type the following (pressing okay after each one):-

    net.exe stop wuauserv

    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

    net.exe start wuauserv

    Try WU again.



    Otherwise follow this article to reinstall the WU Client -
    The Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site do not scan for updates when
    you repair a failed installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or of Windows XP Service
    Pack 1

    Also, you may need to download/install fix & reboot:

    NB: Windows Update/Automatic Updates started offering 927891 on 22 May-07.
    If "Update for Windows XP (KB927891)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs (make
    sure Show Updates box is checked), it's already installed. cf.

    following your advice and reinstalling agent with force option :

    WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86 /wuforce

    solved the issue.

    ....Finally my WU is working again :-)

    Some background:
    ===============
    It all began with some variation of the STRAT WORM which installed some
    malicious files (most noticeable is the %windir%\system32\e1.dll) – This is
    some sort of windows messenger spam.

    After my antivirus failed to remove the worm, I used the following link in
    order to remove it:
    http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/viru...AT.GG&VSect=Sn

    Note that after looking at the registry (start->run->regedit) I found out
    that the names mentioned in the removal instruction are not the same – I
    looked for names, and the dates of the files (Most of the files were in
    %windir% and %windir%\system32 and the creation date was the same as the
    infection date).
    ================

    I don't know if the worm and the WU problem are connected, but starting with
    this worm and until crossing this solution, windows update was not able to
    work (for some weeks by now).

    I have the identical problem. But your post
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916259 is for a auto extracting file so I am
    unable to extract it to a directory it runs automatically and then says the
    files already exists.

    Place the downloaded file in a folder called C:\temp


    Try this from Start, Run -
    C:\temp\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /X:C:\temp

    You'll be asked to run the file - it will then extract to the C:\temp folder.
