Update after Windows XP Repair Installation

Afetr a frustrating time trying the various fixes on this page the following
sequence worked for me. I had to repair windows after hardware problems
disrupted my installation, with frequent auto-resets and lots of lost work.
New install has now been running OK for a week, and all updates have been
installed.

Unistall Windows Installer 3.0 or 3.1 from <Control Panel><Add or Remove
Programs>
Download WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe to local folder (e.g c:\Download\)
from Windows KnowledgeBase
Download WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe to same folder
Reboot to Safe Mode (F8)
Delete folder c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
Reboot normally
Click <Start> <Run>
Enter c:\Download\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce <OK>
Reboot
Run WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe from c:\Download\
Reboot
Go to Windows Update site
Windows Installer3.1 will install automatically
Reboot
Go to Windows Update site and install updates

I have been having the same problems as you but I haven't been able to
get your recipe to work, can you advise me what I am doing wrong ?

I cannot see Windows Installer 3.x on Control panel so cannot remove
it ?

It just comes back when I restart, and has exactly the same things
inside it. I did boot to safe mode before deleting it, is there
something else needed ?

Rest of procedure fails becaus eof this I think.

You did research... Or so it seems since you are replying to a given
posting...

Did you miss this?

Any Google/Newsgroup searches for your problem before asking? I only ask
because this newsgroup is over-flowing with the following answer ( I know -
I have posted it many times myself... ;-) ):

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)

Do all suggested methods. Hope that helps!
