See if you can update manually :
How to manually download the latest definition updates for Windows Defender

Error code 80070005 translates to ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED
Is the system experiencing issues installing any other updates ?
I use windows vista home basic and have tried to manually update windows
defender updates, but have been unsuccessful. I am also having problems
updating windows update with the error Code 0x80070643. Any suggestions?
Hello, I too have had the same problem with both codes recently and tried to
install it manually for both and it said it did but when I went to check it
gave me the error code 0x80070643 again. Is there a different step to be
taken? I also went into help and it said that code was because office support
was disabled but mine was not..So I am kind of lost as well.
Thanx!
i went to windows update in vista clicked the check for updates button and
got the 80070005 error, i dont know why i am getting it or how to fix it can
somebody please help me.
It is pretty bad, but rather typical, when Microsoft won't even get things to
work correctly. They obviously don't have a fix or answer, so typical.
This comment is so true. It is now September 2009, and i still have this
problem with this darn code. Do we have a fix-it for this problem yet?
This very old thread describes several different problems. Please start a new
thread describing exactly what *your* problem is, including which operating
system you are using and which service pack is installed, and hopefully someone
will be able to help.

I had this similar/same problem and the only way I found to resolve it was
to first uninstall Windows Defender, & then reinstall it again. That has
probably been suggested on this thread before but give it a try anyway.
I am trying to install updates SP2 for Vista through
Windows Update
but I cant , every time I get the same mesage to reinstall it again .
