Me too, SBS 2003 has been failing to install for three months now. Either
from Windows Update on IE6 OR from downloadable setup.exe.
The latest version also fails, but at least tries to install (previous
version wouldn't get past checksum error [or similar]).
I note no replies to this question. Looks like this is a known problem and
MS may be struggling to fix it...

I too have this same problems on my SBServer2003. I tried these fixes from
Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798/en-us
Was able to run the backlogged updates (after step 3, rename CatRoot2 fix),
but SP2 still will NOT install.

Pretty much the same process here. Went through the staged "fixes"
(Cryptographic Services, rename Catalog directories [or whatever]). Managed
to fix the intermediate updates but SP2 AND NOW Net Framework 3.0 fail to
update.
In trying to apply Vista compatability patch, the program reports that "This
version of Server 2003 needs at least SP1"!!! So the new Dell Workstation
won't work properly.
My tolerance of Microsoft ubiquity is diminishing rapidly.
Am trying a re-boot and trying again this evening.

Have you applied SP1? I did not. Might try that, if it work, then move on
to SP2....

Have had SP1 loaded on for some time now - this isn't a problem by the looks
of things. The main reason for the upgrade is for the Vista patch - new
vista business workstation works okay with most applications without it but
is extemely slow logging on to the network in the mornings.
Come on Microsoft sort this out!

I have the same problem too... Using the methods listed at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798/ I can get it to get as far as
Backing up the registry, but then it fails telling me "Failed to
install catalog files".
When will MS sort this problem????
