Note To install this update, you must have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and ..NET Framework 1.1 SP1 installed. Windows Update detects whether these packages are installed. Windows Update automatically installs these packages for you.

If the 886904 update is installed, you must uninstall the 886904 update before you install Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Otherwise, the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 installation will not succeed.

To determine whether the 886904 update is installed, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click to select the Show Updates check box.
    3. In the Currently installed programs list, look for the following
    item:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904)

If this item appears, you must remove the hotfix. To remove the hotfix, click Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904), and then click Remove. Then, visit the Windows Update Web sit to download and install Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

I keep getting this problem too. I have already found and followed this advice to no avail. My system had KB886903 hotfix installed... which somehow appears to be the same thing. Removed it. Rollup 2 still fails. :-(

Like Andrew I am unable to install the update even after removing hotfixes and all the .NET versions suggested by other group members. Really frustrating. :-(

What worked for me was uninstalling KB904706, but I tried several others that didn't work.

Re: Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB90

you don't tell anybody what to do about 886903 what do you do if you have this and not 886904. I don't have service pack 1 and update does not tell me what to do

886903 is the MS05-004 update for .NET 1.1 with SP1
886904 is the MS05-004 update for .NET 1.1 without SP1.

Your statement that you have 886903 but not SP1 appears to be inconsistent.

I don't think you read my post. ou kept saying the dame thing so here is what I had to do this works Remove kB8971781 and KB904706. Worked great

Thanks you LauraJ! I had already tried system restore and have been grinding my teeth at the prospect of starting yet again with a fresh installation of MCE; but your solution made rollup 2 install perfectly.

Re: Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB90

This was also the correct solution for me. I removed the KB904706 update via the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel (after checking to Show Updates). rebooted and did the Windows Update again. I had KB886903 installed installed but not KB886904.

After updated, I was then able to reinstall the KB904706 update as well as other MCE updates that followed the rollup.

Re: Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB90

I removed KB904706 and KB912812 (someone's suggestion in another discussion group) in an attempt to be able to successfully install update rollup 2. Now Internet explorer will not work at all - I get a warning pop-up that says, "The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfoByURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WININET.dll"

Can anyone help me get Explorer back up and running? Once that happens I will worry about getting the media center update rollup 2.

At a rough guess, you need to uninstall IE 7 beta.

That worked well. Now I will try for the update rollup 2 for media center xp 2005.

I am having this problem too. I need to install KB900325, but it fails with error 0x643. I have IE 7 beta 3 installed. What all do I need to uninstall before I try installing KB900325?

Re: Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB90

You need to uninstall IE beta 3 by simply going to "add/remove programs" in your control panel and removing IE. It looks like you're removing IE entirely but it actually only removes the Beta 3 part of it and then you should be able to open IE. That worked for me.

Sorry, I don't think I made myself very clear. My Internet Explorer was fine, I'm having the problem stated the first post - 0x634. I just wanted to know what all updates I need to uninstall to get Rollup 2 to install.

I too had the KB886903 not 904, and uninstalling KB904706 did the trick, I clicked on KB904706 to remove it and a message said cannot remove how did you remove it?

Remove Windows Media Player version 11 (you'll roll back to version 10), then you should be able to install rollup 2. I did not have to do anything else (from what I remember).

Uninstalling the "Security Update for Windows XP (KB904706)" fixed my problem.

I cannot get this to install. It "fails" but there is no indication of why.
    Please, any ideas?
    Thanks

Re: Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB900325

Same here. I opened a support incident with MS the other day (free for Windows Update). I have a freshly installed PC (MCE2005) and can't friggin' believe this is happening. Every suggested fix online has failed for me. I spent hours/days working on this, time of which I really don't have for this nonsense.

    These are my symtoms:

    -- \WINDOWS\mcsetup.log --
    Generic Package: 04/10/07. 22:03:01
Looking for existing install of the generic package
    Creating Process: WindowsXP-KB899337-v2-x86.exe /quiet /norestart
    Process returned 0x00000643

Function (ExecCmdInThread) Post Message for Package id : 1043.

    -- \WINDOWS\MCSetup_UI.log --
    10:02:22 PM : Initializing 1st package.
10:02:22 PM : Install package 1 [Hotfix for Windows XP (KB895572)].
10:02:38 PM : Install package 2 [Hotfix for Windows XP (KB895572)].
10:02:50 PM : Install package 3 [Hotfix for Windows XP (KB891593)].
10:03:01 PM : Install package 4 [Hotfix for Windows XP (KB895961)].
10:03:12 PM : Install package 5 [Hotfix for Windows XP].
The update to Media Center was not successful. The computer will now be restarted and restored to the state it was in before the update. Please try the installation again, or contact your hardware manufacturer for assistance if the problem persists.
10:03:24 PM : Rebooting the machine.
10:03:24 PM : Checking Exit Code.
    10:03:24 PM : MCinstaller returned exit code - 1603
    10:03:24 PM : Exiting

These are consistently occurring regardless of what changes, uninstalls of hotfixes, etc are made to my PC. I asked MS support what the last install package is all about. Maybe they will show some integrity and answer the question instead of providing additional textbook responses.
If I get anything helpful I'll update.
