Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 KB921896

KB 921896 downloads using Windows Vista Update but will not install. I get
error message 2B26 and sometimes 2B22. I spent over 3 hours with Microsoft
Live Chat India this morning. The technician could not explain the meaning
of the error codes. I was told that Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is
incompatible with Vista. So the technician remotely downloaded and installed
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2. When I tried to install KB 921896 again, I
still received the same error code from Windows Update. I was told that the
technician downloaded the update that was compatible with Vista. So what do
I do? This is the first big problem that I have experience with Vista since
    I upgraded from XP.

RE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 92189

I downloaded and installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 from the
Microsoft Download page. I restarted the computer. I went to Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Services and tried to start MSSMLBIZ. It began to
start and then stopped when the green bar got about half way across. The
following message came up: "SQL Server MSSMLBIZ service on Local Computer
started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not
in use by other services or programs." I went to Windows Update for Vista
and discovered that the same update (KB 921896 - 56.5 MB) was waiting for
download and installation. I tried to download and install. The download
occurred but the installation quit when the green bar was about half way
across. I received the error code 2B22. The Hot Fix file information is too
big to post with this reply. I will post the Hot Fix file data on the next
    reply.

SQL Server SP2 is supported on Vista. Can you please copy/paste the contents
of the summary.txt file located at %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL
    Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix.

This error indicates the service can be started. Maybe an expired password.

I also tried to start the MSSMLBIZ service from the Microsoft SQL
Configuation console. The blue bar got 95% of the way across when the
following message suddenly appeared: "The request failed or the service did
not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable
error log for details. I searched for and did not find a new error log or
    summary text file.

RE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 92189

MSSMLBIZ is locked out when I try and install the MS SQL 2005 SP2 from the MS
download website. I am unable to put a check in the box next to MSSMLBIZ.
There are check boxes in the other choices, and I can remove them if I
desire. If I had a choice, I would uninstall the server and reinstall it.
But I don't know where it came from in the first place. And the purchase
cost from vendors is prohibitive (thousands of dollars). Is this server
absolutely necessary? Everythings seems to work on my desktop computer with
an incompatible SP1 product and the inability to upgrade. Help please?

Please let me know if you are able to resolve it. Thanks.

RE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 9

Anything that you can do to help would be appreciated. The summart.txt seems
to indicate that my MS...BIZ file is not qualified for the upgrade. I don't
know why that would be. I have always used genuine Microsoft products. I
just upgraded my MS Office products to 2007. Can I uninstall SQL Server 2005
Express and reinstall a complete Express version that handles Vista? Or will
that interfere with the operation of the MS Office 2007 products? I have MS
Office 2007 Professional, MS Visio 2007 Standard, MS Accounting 2007, MS One
Note 2007, MS Sharepoint Designer 2007. This was a very costly upgrade this
    time. Thanks for your help!

RE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 92189

I tried to download KB921896 again tonight. Again it failed to install. Is
it possible to uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express using the applications
uninstaller in Control Panel and then download and install a fresh copy from
Microsoft.com? Or will there still be a problem with Vista compatibility?
There doesn't seem to be an answer frothcoming from anywhere. All of this
should work, but it doesn't. I can't even send files to my Palm in Vista.
    Yikes!!!

Still unable to install KB921896. Still no solution to the problem. My
computer, my notebook PC, my brother's three computers, and my
mother-in-law's new Vista Acer PC all have this same problem. I expect that
there are vast numbers of people out there with the same problem, too. I
hope a soluton is found quickly. I will keep checking.

Yes I get the error too, and it does look like a lot of other folk have the
same problem. I'm running XP home, so I don't think it's anything to do
    with Vista.

How were you searching and for what?

E.g. in your previous post perhaps you could use log
as a find argument and then try to open directly:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
    Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\Redist9_Hotfix_KB921896_SqlSupport.msi.log

(space character for Setup Bootstrap is likely)

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
    Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\Redist9_Hotfix_KB921896_sqlncli.msi.log

    (ditto)

    Etc.

So, then I would try opening the containing subdirectory

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\

to see what else is in there. E.g. perhaps there would also be initial logs
with more clues for the products which "do not qualify for this update"?

I have a new Toshiba laptop with XP Professional and I keep getting the error
message that Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 failed
to install following update. The error code is: 0x2B22. How do I stop it or
    get the update installed?

I was also getting the 2B26 error when trying to install KB 921896 (on a new
laptop with Vista). Here's how I got it to work:

    1. Opened the SQL Server Configuration Manager
    2. Opened SQL Server 2005 Network Coniguration
    3. Right clicked on Protocols for MSSMLBIZ and selected Properties
    4. Set Force Encryption to No
    5. Opened SQL Server 2005 Services
    6. Started SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) and SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)
    7. Installed KB 921896

Thank you for sharing your resolution. ; )

For other ideas you could try searching the SQL newsgroups for
the decimal equivalent of your code. For example, see also:

    (Live Search for
    KB921896 11046 site:microsoft.com
