I have been fighting with Dell .. I have a brand new Dell M1210 with 4Gb
RAM, BIOS only reports 4096Mb installed but 3327Mb available ... after much
time on the Dell chat support, I finally got the answer: Dell maps out the
top 500Gb of RAM space for memory-mapped PCI cards!! Another 256Mb for shared
RAM for the Video card and that takes care of 750Mb of your installed memory.
They use a 32-bit m/board with 64-bit processor and ran out of address space
.... not that any combination of peripherals on a notebook would require 500Mb
of addressability!
I won't buy a Dell again ... I want to post my 'experience' with their chat
support, maybe others will get a laugh :-)
As an aside ... Dell only provide the 32-bit version of Vista ultimate, a
fact they neglect to mention on their ordering page (or anywhere else).
Microsoft 'sells' Ultimate as having both 32 and 64 bit versions, other
versions you can upgrade for a small fee from the Microsoft web site. But you
can't upgrade Ultimate and Dell won't provide the 64-bit version. The answer
from Dell "go buy a retail copy of Vista and upgrade it". Sic Semper Tyrannis!
