Possibly. What browser are you using? If IE what version?

BTW when others have complained about this before I always thought
it was the popup menu which was the problem but you are implying that
you can see the popup menu. In any case, I suspect the likely cause of
that symptom is still going to be a misconfigured popup stopper.
Strange that almost the identical popup window occurs in each case...
Are you already logged in at least before trying that option?
That would avoid one extra popup window (e.g. for the login).

However, to answer your question, have you tried using the web site's search tool?
Unfortunately the filters are usually either not used or misused but you could find
previous suggestions by searching with (e.g. press Alt-7 and enter): 0x66A MVP

If you want to see my previous replies on the topic search for just: 1642

    Good luck

It would be a pleasure to introduce you to newsgroups

Below are some useful links to help.
You have said you do not use OE, but that does not matter.

    http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache...lnk&cd=1&gl=uk

    http://help.bellsouth.net/bellsouth/...2-d47528a97b4e

OR, if you go to Help whilst Outlook is open you should find the
instructions there as well.- in the index or search. I had the above in my
favourites - saved from when I went to setup newsgroups at work - it was
    handy having some pictures :-)
At work we use O/L 2003 and I had no problem setting up 'news'.
    Good luck

Most important - do not forget to munger your address i.e.
when you are making the entries in the General Tab - News Account put
    'msnews.microsoft.com'
Then under User Info - choose any name say Matt the Hatt.
Then Email Address - munge this however you like - say MattNoSpam @No
    Spam.com
Never disclose your real email address - newsgroups are targeted by spam
    address gatherers.
Come back if you have a problem

Thanks for the friendly welcome. Its a pleasure to be here :)

Thank you for all your advice, Antioch. However, as Robert Aldwinckle
guessed, the problem was simply down to my pop-up blocker being on. I have
added this site to my allow list and now the 'new question' button works
fine, thereby negating the need for me to go through O/L.

    Best regards,

    Matt

Your suspicions were spot on, Robert. My popup stopper was the culprit (as I
explained above to Antioch). Thank you for suggesting this.

    > Strange that almost the identical popup window occurs in each case...

Whats also strange was that the 'reply' button worked fine but not the 'new
    question' one.

    > Are you already logged in at least before trying that option?

    Yes, I was logged in.

    > However, to answer your question, have you tried using the web site's search tool?

Yes I've tried that, but still haven't found a solution. I'm also in
e-correspondence with MS technical support, but they too have been unable to
    provide one so far.

To date I have tried the following:
    Disabled my anti-virus and firewall
Deleted all the components from my c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder
Removed, then one by one manually reinstalled .NET Framework 1.1 and all of
    its updates.
Someone on another support forum told me that its not a critical update
anyway (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928365), so its not worth trying to
install it. However this appears to be contrary advice to the Windows Update
page which lists it as "high priority" and "strongly recommends" its
    installation.

Unless anyone has any further suggestions, or the support tech comes up with
something, I'm not too sure where to go from here. I will try searching for
    your previous replies however.

    Thanks,

    Matt
