RE: Error 0x80070005 at Windows Update!

    Try this:
    1. On the windows update page, left hand side. Click "Use Administrator
    Options"
    2. Under "Update multiple operating systems", click "windows update
catalog". It's at the end of the sentence.
    3. A new browser window opens up, on the left hand side click on "Windows
    update".
    4. Click "Scan for update".
    5. Once the scan is complete, click on "install".

    Anton,

Have you been watching Raymond's attempts to get some diagnostics
with me? He has the same code but a different symptom in the log
and even turning on "verbose" logging isn't helping identify the cause
    of it.

Why don't you try activating "verbose" logging too?
Perhaps you will be lucky and not have to resort to those RegMon
and FileMon traces that I have suggested that Raymond try.

    Ref. KB902093

It didn't seem to expand the lines were are interested in.
E.g. we are given no further clue about either path or filename
which are to be inferred from these messages:

    > 2005-08-20 19:24:47 1772 ca0 Handler Updateci: WinSEUpdateHandler::_Inventory: Installer returned 0x5 (5)

The messages suggest a possible permissions problem
or some other kind of inhibition regarding files.
(I assume that you have already done the standard cacls
checks and clearances in the the SoftwareDistribution folder.)
So I would hope that my standard FileMon filter would
expose some relevant details about the failures.
    E.g. SoftwareDistribution;Update;CatRoot
would capture write and read attempts in the Download directory (e.g.)
writes to the log as well as execution of update.exe modules
(e.g. during an install) as well as updates to its other database.

Notice my explanation to Raymond of the value of using
FileMon's Clock Time and Milleseconds options
since they can provide much more accurate timestamps
for the log records than the seconds granularity they show.
This is especially useful when you are doing concurrent
RegMon tracing but it can still be useful and interesting
e.g. to see if there are any long intervals (relatively speaking)
    between file accesses.

BTW I would make the same suggestion to you that I made
to Raymond. You can reduce the volume of your traces
and make them easier to understand if you limit your update
attempt to just one phase of just one update using the AU
    prompts.

    Good luck

I think, that KAVICHS is file stream for Kaspersky AntiVirus. But I thought
Kaspersky AntiVirus had been disabled... I didn't see its process.

I've made only one update. This error always I received on any update
(critical or just update from Windows Update-it doesn't matter).

I think I haven't opportunity to get access to another system (with Windows
XP PRO RUS SP2). The only system nearby is Windows XP PRO SP2 EN. And there
    are all patches installed.
