are you running a third party firewall?

    which antivirus do you use?

    Re: [Error number: 0x80070005]

Did you install any security templates on your machine before upgrading to
    SP2?

Please run the command below and post the output.

    sc sdshow bits

Does it match the output below: (one line)

    D:AR(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;SY)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)S: (AU;FA;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;WD)

If so you are seeing the error because the security templates incorrectly
removed the read access to the Network Service account for the BITS service.
This error has been corrected in the security templates. So to fix the
problem please download the latest security template and apply it and then
try to start the BITS service as follows:

    net start bits

Alternatively, you can add read permissions to the NetworkService account by
appending (A;;KRLCLO;;;NS) to the DACL as follows and then try to start the
    BITS:

    sc sdset bits
    D:AR(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;SY)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)(A ;;KRLCLO;;;NS)S:(AU;FA;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;WD)

    net start bits

    Re: [Error number: 0x80070005]

I followed your instructions and it worked great... for awhile.
In the past week I have had to use the commands to start BITS 2-3 times.
Why do I have to keep strating BITS this way?

    Re: [Error number: 0x80070005]

I doubt if you have to. I suspect you were only shown that command
in order to allow you to test your modification to the service's security
descriptor. What Startup type do you have for the service?
FWIW I have mine set at Manual and it seems to be started
    automatically when necessary.

If you need more help, just to have something more to work with,
tell us what your Startup type is set to for that service,
whether you have made any changes in its Log On tab
and show what you get in response to this command:

    sc queryex bits

    Robert:

The startup is set to automatic and recovery is set to re-start the service.
Others in my office are not having issues. At the moment BITS is working fine.

Here is the output you requested:

    SERVICE_NAME: bits
    TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
    STATE : RUNNING
    <STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSIBLE,ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN>
    WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 <0x0>
    SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 <0x0>
    CHECKPOINT : 0x0
    WAIT_HINT : 0x0
    PID : 1696

Why? Have you tried manual instead?

What symptom are you trying to deal with besides noticing
that the BITS service sometimes goes away?

BTW I just noticed the cross-post. I'm posting from WU NG.

    Re: [Error number: 0x80070005]

The service stopped again. I just switched it to manual.
The only problem I'm dealing with is BITS not starting. When I want to
update, I have to run the command lines (I put them in a batch file) to start
the service before I can update.

    Re: [Error number: 0x80070005]

My point is that "BITS not starting" is not really a good description
of a problem with WU, unless your log is showing when BITS is
in Manual mode that there is a message in your log which says there
was a failure to start it. I think that your starting BITS is probably
a workaround that you have decided to use to avoid some other symptom
that you are not disclosing. That's the symptom that should be looked at
in order to get your WU working normally.

BTW since you do start BITS manually you may have a better idea
than most which log messages are associated with it. (I.e., most
users are oblivious of BITS starting and stopping and the only clue
in the log when some other task is involved is its PID. Presumably
the PID that it gets when you start it shows up in some of your log
messages? E.g. if you did a download with that BITS task you
showed us look for messages with 1696 in them.

    Hint: sc queryex bits
shows you the PID when it is running.

    Error number 0x80070005

    Hi,

i've got following problems : When I search for updates,
    following appears:

"Get the latest Windows Update software."
We've made improvements to our website. To download the new version of the
software and begin using Windows Update, please click Install Now."
    After downloading following appears:

    "Error number: 0x80070005]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
    "

And all the tipps described above didn't solve the problem! So, could anyone
    help me???

The error code 0x80070005 means "access denied"

    have you tried this?

**/Updates from the Windows Update Web site are not installed and an
"Error 0x80070005: Access is denied" error message is logged to the
    Windows Update.log file

Yes, tried all the methods described there (except Method 1, because don't
know how to do it) but it didn't helped. Tried also all methods described in
this newsgroup but that didn't help!

    Re: Error number 0x80070005

    start / run / cmd.exe

and at the command prompt, type

    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
    /verbose

if that does not work, start /run /cmd.exe and type
"%windir%/windowsupdate.log", and post the last 20 or 30 lines from this
    file.

    maybe??

    corporative firewall?

In any case, in the windowsupdate.log appear the error codes:

    0x80245003 and 0x8024400a

The error code 0x8024400a means "failed in parsing response"
and the error code 0x80245003 "The redirectorId in the downloaded
wuredir.cab is smaller than the cached cab"
