    Updates won't install

After my Windows updates download over night, when I go to the bottom right
hand corner to double-click the balloon to install them, the balloon
disappears and the updates don't install. When I try to use Windows updates,
it tells me I need to make changes in the security section of Internet
Explorer. Those changes are correct. Anti-virus is up to dates and I did a
    rescan. Also checked for Adware/Spyware.

    Any thougths.

    RE: Updates won't install

    Dear Jimbo,

I am having the same problem on two Windows 2000 systems, since about July
    20, 2005.

    (1) The Client Notification Icon appears and displays
"Updates are ready for your computer."
"Click here to install these updates."

    (2) I click and the Icon disappears.

I am seeing numerous errors in my C:\WinNT\System32\WindowsUpdate.log file:

Agent WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installed rule, updateId =
    {ED300F67-421C-4C08-B3BA-F35C55F3B427}.100, error = 0x80041017
AU WARNING: GetUpdateMetadata failed, error = 0x80070005
AUClnt FATAL: GetUpdateMetadata failed. hr=80070005, numUpdates=9,
    lcid=00000409

AUClnt FATAL: AU client initiating shutdown encountered fatal error. hr =

I have not found any clear support for these problems online.

    Best regards,

I also had error 80070714 but found a solution. I have Spyware Doctor
installed. I tuned off the "On Guard Protector" while I installed the Windows
Defender Update. It worked for me. Hope this helps.

    Updates won't install

After recent PC problems when it was just shutting down as if the power was
shut off. I used my XP home edition cd to carry out a repair and then went to
Update where 85 items were listed.
These downloaded after a few attempts as the pc still randomly shuts down.
However they won't install.. The 85 update also download via Automatic
Updates but these also fail to install.

I've used troubleshooter to resolve this problem and also tried with Norton
    turned off without success.

    Hope you can help

    Hello Engel

Thank you for your reply and the suggestions therein.

Firstly I tried all the fixes on the support page , eg click, start, run cmd.
    cmd prompt etc.

I'm pleased to report that by downloading and running Dial-a-fix in safe
    mode. all the
required updates have been downloaded and installed.

To check, i've just visted Updates and none are available for my installation.

Again, many, many thanks for you prompt reply and help that brought a
    frustrating couple of days
    to a happy conclusion.

    Updates won't install!

Yesterday I downloaded the free 60 trial of Microsoft Office 2007. Ever since
I've been getting update notifications. 9 of them
    (KB947801,KB907417,KB946974,KB946691,KB950113,KB51808, MSOffice
SP1,Office2003, SP3) are either for the Office 2007, or Office 2003. They
will not install. I get no error msgs. But I keep getting prompted by
    Automatic Updates to install these.
3 days ago, with the help of LiveOne Tech. Support, I uninstalled and
reinstalled Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. I'm getting prompted by LiveOne and
Automatic Updates to install KB28365, a security update for .NET Framework.
    That won't install either.

Looking for all the help I can get.

I had the same problem and followed the MS troubleshooting procedure (on the WUD website) and it worked well. 22 out of my 25 updates pending could be installed. Here is the script they advice:

    1. Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wups2.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll

The below command will *usually* resolve update installation failures in
XP, * ESPECIALLY * after the application of SP3 has been done.

    regsvr32 wups2.dll

    RE: Updates wont install

Hi Michelle, are there are specific error codes?

Perhaps something in the Windows Update log may assist in tracking the
    problem down -

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
    and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error
    code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If
    appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you.
On the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other
    suggestions by searching the Newsgroup.

This may provide further clues as to why the updates failed.

    RE: Updates won't install

    Hello,
I was having trouble with my laptop installing Windows updates so I read and
did what this post says to do. I added that file to my registry and ran Dial
a Fix. About 10 updates still won't install. And now a new and scarier
problem.....my hard drive of 18 GB is FULL. About a month ago I ran Disk
Defrag and less that 1/2 my hard drive was full. Can you help? What could
have caused my drive to fill up so fast? I've run all kinds of file cleaners
and removed tons of files and still only have 500 MB left of space. Any
    ideas what I should do?

    Re: Updates won't install

    Hi Shenan,
Thanks so much for replying. I know you think it's MY STUFF, but I swear
it's not my files or apps. I just found this folder (that I didn't create and
    don't know what it is).
    C:\MSOCache\All Users\90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9

It's got bunches of .CAB files....VERY BIG FILES. What are they and can I
    delete them?
