When going to Windows Update, get:
"Checking for latest version of Windows Update Software"
hanging for about a minute before aborting with error
8DDD0004. No reference in the KB for that error.
Did a manual download and re-install of iuctl.cab. No
joy.

into a "I can't get there from here because we don't communicate" kinda
message, here are some things to try:
Close all open applications. Then:
1. Open Control Panel/Internet Options. On the Security tab, click on
Trusted Sites, then Sites. Click to clear the "Require server
verification....." and then add the following sites to your Trusted Zone:
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (note the HTTPS )
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
Then click OK to exit that portion. Still in the Trusted Sites section,
click the Custom Level... button; scroll down to the Scripting section and
Enable all 3 options there.
While still in the Custom Level... section, back up towards the top of the
list and check that no ActiveX option is set to Disable. If you don't want
to blindly Enable them, at least set it to Prompt.
OK and work your way back to the General tab in the Internet Options applet.
Click the Delete Files... button, and select the offline files option when
presented. When that is done, and still on the General tab, click to clear
your History.
Close that applet and Control Panel. Open My Computer, right-click to
select the drive where this version of Windows is installed and select
Properties. Then select Clean Up, pick all items, and let that complete.
Use the same Clean Up for any other drives/partitions you may use for IE
TIF, TEMP/TMP storage.
Almost done. <g> Next go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
and download/install the latest VBScript engine.
Restart in SAFE mode. While there delete these two folders:
..:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
..:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
Restart back into "Normal" mode and give WU another try by going directly to
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com in IE. Be sure to allow the install
of any ActiveX controls if so prompted (watch for the yellow bar at the
top). Assuming you get into the WU site without errors, do a "Custom
Install" scan of your system. If you get offered a whole bunch of items, you
can decline them all EXCEPT for BITS 2.0 which you must install. After
installing BITS, Restart the computer and see if WU will work now without
further errors.

Hi;
First, are you certain the item is missing? It normally won't show up as a
default unless you select the "Add-ons that have been used...." option.
If you verify that the item is indeed missing from the "Add-ons that have
been used...." list, can you check to see if you have a file named WUWEB.DLL
in your System32 folder; and what version of that file you have?
Please post back with the results of your investigation.

Have check both add-on lists. WUWebControl Class is
missing.
WUWEB.dll found in system32 ver 5.4.3790.2180.
Could not find any WUWebControl references in the
Registry either ?!?

You will then get a menu of options and you can select Safe Mode from there.

Cheers for the long post Sky King, however like other readers, this didn't
solve my issue!
I eventually tracked it down to a modem driver, which I'd installed
incorrectly!
When querying the modem, it used to lock the PC for 30seconds and then
report that the modem was already in use. After trawling google, I finally
found the 'correct' driver for it, and lo the Windows Update service website
now works
