Can't install Updates, recieve: Error number: 0x80096001

Whenever Windows Update searches for or downloads updates
I recieve this error notification: "Windows Update has
encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page." Windows won't help and neither will Toshiba. I
couldn't find a FAQ listed that addressed my particular
    error code. Please Help. Thanks.

    Hi

    Please try this:

    Open a command prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe)

in the command prompt, run the following:

    net stop wuauserv
    cd /d %windir%\softwaredistribution
    del /s wu*.cab
    net start wuauserv

Please let us know if this solved the problem.

Re: Can't install Updates, recieve: Error number: 0x80096001

I've also experienced the 0x80096001 error, and none of the suggested fixes
(deleting wu*.cab, and registering some dll's) have helped, so I'm posting a
small chunk of the WindowsUpdate.log file in the hopes that someone has an
idea what's up. The computer I'm working on is a Windows ME machine that was
updated to Windows XP Home, going back to the oldest Windows XP restore point
(which might be one created very shortly after the sustem was upgraded to
Windows XP) doesn't seem to help.

    Thanks.

    Hi

You could try the steps in this post to try to get WU to work:

    http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP14.phx.gbl

Also, if you have Windows XP SP2 installed, check that the
WuWebControlClass is enabled in Internet Explorer:
    http://groups.google.com/groups?thre...0microsoft.com

If nothing of the above worked, try the steps in this post:

    http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...tngp13.phx.gbl

Here are some more steps you can try if the above was of no help:

"Software update incomplete" error message when you visit the
    Windows Update Web site
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585

You cannot install some updates or programs
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822798

    Windows Update Is Not Installed

Re: Can't install Updates, recieve: Error number: 0x80096001

I tried all those suggestions and nothing seemed to help. First I tried
everything listed, except the option for SP 2 (because WindowsUpdate stopped
working when they went to version 5, the same time they released SP 2). So,
after I tried all those I downloaded SP 2 (not via Windows update, via the
Microsoft website), and then tried Windows Update and it failed with the same
error, 0x80096001. I then checked (since I had just installed SP 2), and
WuWebControlClass was enabled, so that's not a problem.
