How to fix .Net Error Code 0x66A

Hello, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place. I've done a search for .Net errors. On Fri. I got a update notice that .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 needed to be updated. I did a system restore and it disappeared until today. I've found some things to do from a search and nothing has worked. I have Windows xp3 home. I've used the .Net removal tool and I use CClean. I don't know how much info to post here. I had a similar problem about 2 yrs ago with a different error code and I don't remember what the cure was. When I downloaded .Net 1.0, it goes to a point and stops at,... Registering System Enterprise :C\Win...\SystemEnterpriseService.dll.
I took days before and I feel each situation is different, so before I try anything else in the forum, I decided to ask for some help. I use Avira freeware. This is such a headache. I have a problem with my Officejet printer saying that there's no connection to the computer. I don't know if there's a connection to .Net or not because the update showed up after the problem on Wed.
What is .Net for and do I really need it? Its such a pain to deal with. I don't now what caused this to happen. Why can't the .Net people come up with a solution for their own problems? I'm so sick of this. The last time was the update for 3.5. It took weeks to finely work and I don't remember what cured it.
I've done too many things to post here. I started on this about 10:30a.m. and now I need some help. TY

Yes .net is an essential component. It is imporntant for operation of many software. NET Framework allows you to run applications developed using the Microsoft platform.. NET In practice, the framework is used by many software programs. Indeed. NET Framework, there are several versions, the compatibility is not necessarily upward. mesterio, TY for your reply. I'm at a stand still at this point. I need to start over in a orderly fashion. I had all those installed until the only way I found to fix the update was to uninstall all the .Net stuff and re-install from 1.0. Everything failed. All the searches come up with different things to do and nothing worked. I need the steps to start fresh and avoid the confusion. This is one of the most problem filled programs. I wish I could remember what the fix was when 3.5 took weeks to finely figure out. I found some .Net info in this forum, so I figured this is a good place to start.
