Running Windows XP SP3 attempting Windows Update.
Attempted to use the information in the below thread, however, I am not
having any success. I have attempted reinstalling the Update agent,
restarting computer and still receiving the same error. Part of the tread
was a little too technical and I was getting lost.
I am having the same problem.

I'm encouintering the same problem as well. I haven't changed my system so I
don't know what's causing this.
This has been going on for about two hours. It is connected with the ActiveX
MUWebControl.
I am seeing this on both server and xp - also, IE6 IE7, IE8 all experiencing
the issue...
Logon to Windows with username:Administrator
Then go to update website, it should work
You suggested solution didn't work for me.
This is really a Microsoft problem based on the number of people with the
problem. The work around for now is to download one of the following updates
and run it.
32-Bit

64-Bit
http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x64.exe
Ian - Some of us can't install IE8 to begin with. If it was related to IE8
only, that would be great and your post would be helpful. Unfortunately it's
plaguing IE6, 7 and 8. We're glad it worked for you, congrats, but that's
not a solution that can be applied to all scenarios.
Thomas - Thank you. I haven't tested the downloads out yet, but at least
it's a step in the right direction. Do you have a URL where Microsoft says
what the problem is? It would be nice if they put word out about it, until
then I can spread the word to my peers via email.
This was caused by a bad DNS record that prevented older clients from being
able to resolve to the correct address to SelfUpdate ( Upgrade to the
latest Update client. )
This has been fixed, but it will take a while to propagate to all DNS
servers.
The newer clients use a different url, so they are not affected. This is
why updating the client manually avoids the problem.

turned off my firewall and antivirus temporary and the update worked.

Thanks a ton! I got the error this afternoon, and yours is the first advise I've seen that actually worked, and fixed the problem.
