Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB953297 Fails to install

    Windows XP Home
    Service Pack 3

All other updates released this date installed fine with the exception of
KB953297. Another home computer installed this update with no problem. The
only difference I can find is that the computer where the install failed had
..NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix KB928366 installed. The article
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953297) states that this recent update
"supersedes" the hotfix. I tried to uninstall the hotfix but that lead to
another problem where it could not find the "netfx.msi" file to continue.
So I stopped that hoping to find another answer here. Any thoughts on what
    I should do?

I believe if you go to MS Downloads and download the manual installer for
KB953297, you can open it and extract the "netfx.msi" file -- the installer
is a self-extracting zipfile, so you need WinRAR or WinZip or similar
utility to open it and extract the "netfx.msi" file .. HTH and good luck ..

Translation: If you had *not* installed KB928366 and you install KB953297,
you do not need to install KB928366.

Thanks for the replies. After attempting several of the fixes mentioned in
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824643, all unsuccessful, I re-installed
version 1.1 and then the new update installed fine.

Re: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB953297 Fails to install

I had the same problem, all 100pc's on the network were failing (due, I
think, to previously installed Visual Studio .Net apps, which updated dot
net). It appears that the installer is referencing a registry key to find
the location of the netfx.msi file. When it fails to find the file it
    errors out.

I grabbed the dotnetfx.exe file from
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en,
opened it with WinRAR (or use any comprssion program) and extracted the
netfx.msi to our network. I then entered the network location into the
    registry key
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\DDE7F2BCF1D91C3409CFF425AE1E271A\SourceList\Net]
"1"=hex(2):<long hex string you will need to change to your netfx.msi
    location>

Then I re-ran the updates and it installed fine.

RE: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB9532

Hi Shawn: Had same problem.... Solution--Uninstall .Net Framework 1.1 from
add/remove programs. This automatically removes an earlier hotfix which i
think is causing the problem.Restart computer and go to windows update as
normal and check for updates. If all is well you will reinstall .Net Framework
1.1 and the problem update KB953297 successfully. This worked on both my
laptops but for some reason i had to try 2 times before the update KB953297
successfully installed on one of mylaptops. Good luck.. Scott.

    Vista 32

I am having the same problem. Found a post for an earlier solution for
Windows XP and Windows 2000. Just type in KB953297 64c and it should come up.

Had same problem...What i did was to uninstall the .Net Framework
1.1 programme from add/remove programmes. This also appears to remove an
earlier hotfix which may be causing the problem. Restart as normal then go to
update site and check for new updates..which will include the .Net Framework
1.1 and KB953297 which should install with no probs. I did this on both my
laptops and worked except i had to try twice with the KB953297 update on one
of them but it did solve the problem.. Hope it works for you ... Scott.

RE: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB9532

My experience was to use the Framework Cleanup Tool to remove all versions of
Framework. Then using MS Update custom, added versions from lowest to most
recent one restart at a time. All Framework versions and updates installed
    successfully.

Just to mention, uninstalling all Framework versions caused a problem with
Roxio 2009 install, so had to uninstall Roxio and reinstall after the
    Framework installs.

Yeh... seems if there's an update failure, it's alway seems to be .Net
    Framework.

RE: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB9532

Hi Shawn, I've had the same problem with KB953297. I used the Cleanup
facility mentioned by Thiggy in his message but only for 1.1. Then, when I
tried to load SP1 for 1.1 directly from its own page I got the message
    "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\V2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll could not be
    loaded"
This obvious Microsoft programming bug referring to V2 instead of V1.1
folder is probably the problem occurring for everyone, or if they don't also
have V2 on their machine it's just crashing.
Microsoft, in their great wisdom, don't seem to have an email address to
report these obvious bugs found (I'm a programmer/designer retired after
almost 40 years in the field - pre Microsoft I might add).

So, if the Microsoft person responsible for reviewing these messages can
pass this on and get the problem fixed, please do it.

And Microsoft, I've also had problems with KB970892 as well, but I don't
have that debugged for you yet

No one here represents or works for Microsoft. You may gain the attention
of an MS engineer if you post here:
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...istawu/threads

Or see the "How to obtain help" section of
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953297 and/or
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970892

When I try to uninstall Framework 1.1 says installation source is not
    available. It also shows 1.1hotfix, 2.0SP2, 3.0SP2 & 3.5SP1

How can I get this update to download.?

Is it necessary to have the .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update
if you have .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2

Do I need still need older versions of the .NET Framework on my system after
    installing .NET Framework 3.5 SP1?
    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...0/9557946.aspx

I unintalled .NET Framework 1.1 because I was having the same issue with the
update for kb953297 but .NET Framework 1.1 will not re-install. I went to
the download page and attempted but it failed. I no longer have microsoft
..NET Framework 1.1 on my computer. I do have microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
SP1 on my computer. Do I really need .NET Framework 1.1?

Probably. It depends on what applications you have installed.

    Perhaps this will help?

You ask an excellent question. Hopefully someone will step up with an
answer. Why would someone install an update of an older verison than current

Re: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB

The .NET framework is installed on user's computers in order to run other
software that uses it. Unfortunately, software designed to use .NET 1 will not
work unless .NET 1 is installed, even if a later version of .NET is.

Not quite correct. If you install version 3.5 SP1 (incidentally this is
all you need even if you don't have 3.5 original) , it installs all
essential previous versions as well. You don't need any other previous
versions. I have done it, and tested it with adobe CS3, CS4 and
    Expression Web 2 & 3, Microaoft Accounting 2009 and Office 2007.

3.5 SP1 is a huge file so it makes sense to bundle everything in it.

RE: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB

I now have a permanent Icon on my computer informing that Updates are
available and when I shutdown the computer, it takes over seven minutes to
shutdown, it's trying to install KB953297 and KB974417.
Have contacted Microsoft U.K. but so far,, No reply.
I suggest everyone who is having a problem should send an email to Microsoft
and tell them about this problem and how disgruntled we are.
