    Windows update Error number: 0x8024D007

Im starting a new thread because I inadvertantly hi-jacked somone else's.
Im using Win XP Home (32bit) SP3.
Im getting the above error upon trying to access the 'Microsoft Update'
site. I had the W32.IRCbot trojan recently, but all that scans Ive done
(Ad-aware, Norton Antivirus, Spybot S&D, Windows Malicious Software Removal
Tool, McAfee Stinger, Trend Micro House Call, Windows defender, and the
Windows Live 'Protection' scan.) reply thats there's no infections.
I did update to IE8, it was after this I found the problem, but Im back on
    IE7 now.
The 'Automatic Updates' box has all the options greyed out and I cannot
start the 'Automatic Updates' service. Trying gives me "Error 2, the system
cannot find the specified file". I downloaded the Windows Updata Agent 30,
but running it gives me the same error as visiting the update page.
If anyone can help out, I'd be gratefull.

Thanks *very* much for starting your own thread!

You may have (much) more work to do:

    1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

    2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
    http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

    3. [Don't skip this step!!] Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware,
including posting the requested logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
