KB967715 -- what is Autorun and why do I want to disable it?

I'm dense. I read Microsoft's explanation and don't understand it.
What is Autorun and why do I want to disable it?

(Hey -- at least I asked).

After you read KB967715 then you are confused.
Also part of this article includes this gem:
"Autorun is also known as AutoPlay"

I think they should rename it to BK517769 ;-)

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715 ?

See JS and PA Bear. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007 may be an
example why it may be a good idea to disable AutoRun.

Autorun is when you shove the CD in the CD Drive and it starts by
itself. Got it. So why didn't the MS article say that.

I think when I saw BK517769, I saw the light,

You are actually not disabling it. You are fixing it so if you decide
to disable it it will actually disable like it should.

Apparently so. What I know for sure is my reghack to disable USB flash drive
autorun does not make any difference.

It appears to me that MS finally fixes the autorun/autoplay problem to
combat the spread of Conficker thru external USB devices or CD
    (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007).

One mo' time: Installing KB967715 only creates an empty Registry key.

Re: KB967715 -- what is Autorun and why do I want to disable it?

I know this KB doesn't disable autorun. What I was saying is I did a reghack
to disable autoplay on some external devices but the settings were ignored.
    Autoplay still kicks in.

My next move is set All Devices autoplay/autorun to disable thru GPO.

I have installed this thing about 10 times since yesterday, since it doesn't seem to retain each prior installation after I shut down or restart my PC. Does anyone know what is going on here? This is a pain in the ***!!! Is there something else that I should be doing to preserve the installation of this KB so I don't have to keep reinstalling it each time at startup???

If you're certain that KB967715 installed:

    1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

    Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

    2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

    Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
    Close the window.

    3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB967715 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
    again").

    4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

    Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

Which security software is monitoring registry changes ?
    [ex: Spybot's 'Immunize' feature]

That's what *may* be preventing it from installing properly.

Re: KB967715 -- what is Autorun and why do I want to disable it?

I have the same problem as RustyCP.
My "Update for Windows XP (KB967715)" keeps showing up everyday, even after I've installed the update, shut down and restarted.
Thanks to PA Bear, I see how I can remove it from the download folder.
But before I do that, I want to be certain that KB967715 is installed. How can I check that?

RE: KB967715 -- what is Autorun and why do I want to disable it?

I signed up for Automatic Updates for Windows XP some years ago. However
since 8th April 2009 the site has automatically downloaded KB967715 no fewer
than 138 times, although I can't find it on my PC. What's going on? Every
time I go onto the update site it offers me this darned update again and I
    don't know how to say I don't want it a 139th time.

It's safe to assume that the update is not installing because of
    interference by *3rd party software*.
    See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715

Try the steps listed under " Known issues with this security update

    * Update 967715 is reoffered multiple times "

    Check the steps:
    * Click Start and choose Run.
    * In the window that appears, type gpedit.msc and confirm by clicking button OK.
    * In the window that appears (GPO), select the left menu: Computer Configuration / Model administration / System.
    * In the window right, double-click option Disable Autoplay.
    * Check the box Active. (You turn off the automatic reader).
