    windows xp service pack 2

I am trying to install service pack 2 on a laptop that is currently running
XP Pro service pack 1 but it keeps crashing. Using the online update never
gave a reason so I downloaded the IT version and am now getting an error
message. It says "Service Pack 2 Setup Error The file
C:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys is open or in use by another
application. close all other applications and then click retry." I have
closed everything that it is possible to close and have even tried to do a
diagnostic boot so that nothing unneaded was running and am still recieving
this error message. Does anyone know what would cause this to happen?

I have already run antivirus using a different machine and run Malwarebytes'
anti-malware on the computer to cleanup any viruses or spyware.

Why are you *just* trying to install SP2 for Windows XP when that was
released in 2004 and SP3 for Windows XP was release in early/mid 2008?

I'd suggest you go to SP3.

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

    Suggestions:

    1) Download the full SP3 installation file and/or burn the ISO download to
    CD.
    2) Ensure (as well as plausible) you have no spyware/malware by doing a full
    scan with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes.
    3) CHKDSK
    4) Defragment
    5) Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
    manufacturer's respective web pages.)
    6) Reboot right before you try to install SP3.
    7) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically.)
    8) Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications when you are about to
    install SP3.

Some (if not all) of that is covered in the above links.

Thanks I had not thought to go straight to SP3. I was just installing SP2
cause it is not my computer but is one that I am working on.

    A. Format & reinstall Windows. Assuming that leaves you with WinXP SP1...

    B. HOW TO get WinXP SP1 fully patched:

    1. Download & save the installer for WinXP SP3 to your desktop:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-1e1555d4f3d4

[Yes, you can skip WinXP SP2 altogether.]

    2. Read & heed:
    http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

    3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file
to install WinXP SP3. Follow all prompts; be patient, and reboot twice when
    the install completes.

    4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

    5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any required software
then click on CONTINUE | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical
security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts.

[I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.]

    6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

    Additional References:

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
    http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

Just curious, do you have Spyware Doctor installed?

I had the same problem on a computer and removed it, and Avast!

(I think it was Spyware Doctor though)

Had no internet/network connectivity too, uninstalling fixed that also.
