I'm having the same problem. I tried 3 times using Update and it failed
everytime. I downloaded the install file from the MS web site and installed
it. It seemed to work but still appears as a required update when I run the
update utility.

Try installing it in Safe Mode.

Try a search? E.g. press Alt-7 and enter: 0x2B2F

Oh. I see you have already tried that.

Ok. Next step would be converting your error code to decimal
and searching with that. E.g. I press the Calculator button on
my keyboard, switch to Hex mode (e.g. press F5) enter the hex
string and press F6. Copy and paste: 11055

So press Alt-7 and paste that...

Ok. So how about a web search restricted to Microsoft servers...
Better make that Microsoft Support servers first...
and English only at that...

None for lang:en. Too many for just 11055. So we need some more
context. Try SQL. And then none for Microsoft Support servers.

Oops. Now I remember Lang: is/was Google's keyword.

Trouble with Installing update Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706).
Not able to install - fails with Error code 0x2B18


I could not install this update. No luck with Microsoft Windows Technical Support suggestion to install in safe mode. So looking at your suggestion above I removed SP3, installed KB955706 successfully !!!! then resintalled SP3 and so far have now managed to install all updates - Im not clever with all this technical stuff... but it seems to have worked - result!! Hope so!! :)

ALSO THE POST TO WHICH I WAS REPLYING TO HAS BEEN REMOVED - the post read "did you install SP3 before KB955706" _ What is happening with this forum I wonder???

So you're saying we should uninstall Windows XP SP3 (downgrading to SP2), then install this SQL server SP3, THEN go back to XP SP3?

Why can't microsoft just get this right? They're the ones automatically installing all this crap in the first place. And when this KB955706 doesn't go well, it just tries again and again, failing each time.

We are all frantically trying to ensure we have all Wiindows updates
installed before the COnficker worm hits, and this particular update SQL
Server 2005 - Service Pack 3 does not install on my machine despite repeated
attempts, and I get the error message 0x2B2F referred to in the other posts.
So I need to ask, since your reply was incomprehensible to me as a NON-IT
person .... , if I just have a regular PC, do I even need to worry about the
SQL setup? I don't have a SQL server. At least, I don't think I do! :-)

I also had problems installing the SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (KB960082)
security update. I tried for months both via the automatic updates and
manually. After looking through the posts in this newsgroup I found a FREE
Microsoft 866 # (from a 2/1/09...thank you) and called it this afternoon. I
was on the phone with a tech (who took over my pc...happily) and resolved the
problem. Accroding to his follow-up email the problem for me (XP) was
......Corrupted dll files and the resolution:
Renamed Catroot2 and software distribution folders and re-registered the
windows update dll files. Was then able to install updates.

I've never used newsgroups to resolve problems but am grateful for the help
it provided me.

My error code was 42D9 - every sufferer seems to get a different code, dependent no doubt on the configuration of their computer. I have tried everything (Microsoft KB and beyond) to get rid of this one. Eventually it dawned on me that if I had SQL Server 2008 on my Vista laptop, why did I need SQL Server 2005 ? So I removed SQL Server 2005 and Hey Presto ! the wretched Microsoft Update no longer insists on an abortive attempt to install SQL Server 2005 SP3. Job Done. However I would emphasise that I am not a database person, so I am unlikely to detect any disbenefits from uninstalling SQL Server 2005.

There seem to be dozens of complaints about this problem in various areas of the Microsoft web site forums. Why is no-one from Microsoft offering any cogent advice and why do we have to put up with this sort of thing anyway ?

I cannot find one single advantage of Vista over and above XP with SP3. It seems to be just a marketing gimmick to get us all to buy an upgrade we don't need. The only advantage I have found is a backhanded one - Vista has forced me to grasp the nettle of upgrading my programming "skills" from Visual Basic 6 to VB 2008. It's an ill wind ......
