Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2

I am running Vista SP1 on Dell Studio 1735. I keep receiving request to
install this update. When I view my update history, the update is listed
many times. However, when I view installed updates, the update is not
listed. Each time I update this, I am told the installation was successful.
But within a minute of restarting my computer, I am prompted to install this
    update again.

Re: Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pa

These steps from MS08-069 seemed to have resolved the issue. Thank you.

The following security updates do not support the complete removal of MSXML
    4.0:
Security update 954430 for Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.0
Security update 936181 for Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.0
Security update 936181 for MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Security update 936181 for MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
This situation occurs because this version of MSXML is installed in
side-by-side mode. To work around this issue, follow these steps:
Remove security update 954430 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in
    Control Panel.
Delete the Msxml4.dll file from the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.
Repair the previous installation of MSXML 4.0 by using the Add or Remove
    Programs item in Control Panel.
The earlier versions of the Msxml4.dll file and of the Msxml4r.dll file are
restored to the side-by-side folder and to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

I checked for updates although Windows Update said my system was up to date
and then downloaded 954430 presented by Windows Update.

I did not receive the potential error message referenced in the article.

    Two updates fail to install
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2

Have tried both advice here with no luck

msiexec.exe is not running in servicxes to be stopped
Downloaded the file from Microsoft and tried to manually install

Error message code is 2203 then the program terminates instal so no option to ignore....

Checked out the version of file in System 32 and it states that it is already Version 4.20.9848.0 (08/05/2007). Why is this showing as a required update..????

Any other clues as to how to solve install problem????
have only focussed on first update at the moment

I checked log the event log first up and the message just really said the update failed no specific help....

I liked the way you got the explanation for the help message....Will use that in future....

    cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
    E:\>net helpmsg 2203

Perhaps your system is too tightly locked down to install
    them successfully?

In the end you are so right it was simply so locked down that the updates couldnt install.

logged on with new administrator account with no restrictions and bingo installed in seconds.

the version of file i was told was the correct version iff the updates were installed (Read in another post somewhere)

its the simply solutions in the end..

    thanks again robert

    Sollution

    Hello

I tried to stop it by renaming the file as suggested by Microsoft
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729

but on vista i got the Access denied error.

Sollution: I simply loged on as Administrator coppied C:\windows\system32\msxml4.dll to another location and then deleted C:\windows\system32\msxml4.dll and got rid of this msg. My system is wroking fine.

This update won't stop updating. Should I turn off automatic updates? It has
updated 8 times now and wants to do it again. I tried this on the 19th but it
is back. Wanting to update again.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type ren %windir%\System32\msxml4.dll msxml4.old, and
    then press ENTER.

Note After you press ENTER, you may receive the following error message.
    Cannot find the file specified.
Ignore this message, and go to step 3.
At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER.
Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.update.microsoft.com (http://www.update.microsoft.com)
Download and then install the latest MSXML security update.

Did you Search this newsgroup and find any other posts about this?

Re: Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pa

I did some research and seems Kodak Easyshare might be the problem. Found
    this discussion.

Kodak's latest update for their EasyShare software, apparently breaks
the KB954430 update for XP SP3, again related to Microsoft XML Core
    Services 4.0 Service Pack.

    1. Using Microsoft update I hid KB 954430 so that it was not reoffered
while I found a solution. I hid it because I do not like turning off
automatic update. Turning off the Automatic update would give the same
result. Make sure you remember to turn it back on. :-)

    2. Downloaded MSXML4-KB954430-enu.exe from:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

    3. Deleted MSXML4-KB954430 using Add Remove program in control panel.

    4. Installed MSXML4-KB954430-enu.exe by clicking on it.

KB954430 has not been reoffered ever since.

So I will either try this or remove Easyshare. What do you think would be
    easier?

Did this work? I have had the same update 106 times now. I tried following
the instructions but got an 'access denied'.

I suggest you try downloading the update from the download center:

    <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=021e12f5-cb46-43df-a2b8-185639ba2807>

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-185639ba2807

(or search Microsoft's web site for 936181) and then try installing it in Safe Mode.

I've been having the same problem for months now. None of the available
    solutions from MS have worked.

    See if this thread helps
    <http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&p=1&tid=5e552874-02fd-4e14-9cb7-3bf976ffc646&mid=5e552874-02fd-4e14-9cb7-3bf976ffc646>

    See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954430

In case that won't help, you want to give installing MSXML 4.0 SP3
a chance, which isn't offered via Windows Update yet:
