    Windows Server 2008 update problem

I originally posted this question at:
    http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/Sho...22346&SiteID=1 since
I thought I was having a problem with SQL Server install. As it turns out SQL
Server 2008 won't install because it can't install .NET 3.5 and Windows
    Installer.

This is a new server - not an upgrade. I have an ACVPI x86Based PC. Intel
dual core E2180 processor. This is on a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
    platform.

I went into Windows Services and confirmed that "Windows Update" is started
    and automatic.

I have followed the directions in:
    http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...8011&SiteID=17
but was unable to resolve my problem.

When I try to update Windows Defender I get:
    Error found: Code 0x880070057

    The errors in WindowsUpdate.log:

Re: Windows Server 2008 update problem

The log excerpts you provided on the SQL
server forum seem to show that CBS is involved.
Up 'til now I had always thought of that as a Vista feature.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc732334.aspx

    (Live Search for cbs.log site:microsoft.com)

Cross-posting to a server NG where others who have installed this
update successfully on your OS are more likely to be reading,
although I imagine that they may be more able to help by seeing
the full context of the error messages in your logs for comparison
purposes than just seeing selected error messages. ; )
Also cross-posting back to SQL Setup so your helper there sees
what is going on elsewhere... ; )

Alternatively to try to understand your logs better what I would do
is Run... ProcMon to supplement all the diagnostics that you are currently
getting with any registry and file acesses that precede each.
You can infer the occurrence of the write of each diagnostic record
    by its length.

Also, I find that trying to use AU or MU to install an MSI update
tends to hide too much of its diagnostics, so you might have better luck
doing manual installs. When you do that you can also request verbose
logging if necessary and then if you use ProcMon that would add more
corresponding supplementary data. One more thing to note about
manual installs--if you get an error message in a message window that
you want to investigate, don't close that window, otherwise you may find
that the related diagnostic files will be deleted when you do.

Finally, when you are extracting log records which include many attempts
over a long time period I think it would be helpful to include
some remarks about how those attempts occurred.
E.g., the COMAPI may represent problems using the WU or MU site
but it would be useful to know what you did which corresponds with
each error incident. That's just a specific example of why I think
seeing error messages with their full context is more useful than
just proving that you are getting some.
