Rightclick the desktop, select Arrange Icons and uncheck AutoArrange

I have already done that as i stated above. I can not move them at all. Not even when holdind down the mouse button. They just stay there. It is weird!

I'm experiencing the exact same issue. Wondering if there are more recent suggestions on how to fix it and thoughts on how this happened. Also unable to move desktop icons freely and they are also not locked; rather 'classic icons' and 'show desktop icons' are selected. No other issues. Started about a week ago.

Is there a folder with the name "Unused Desktop Shortcuts"? System restore
is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Right-click on desktop -> Active desktop -> uncheck "lock desktop items"If you find the folder, select all the files and do a cut (ctrl-x) then go to your desktop and paste. It should be that simple. For more information, you can check out the following link.

Re: Unable to move desktop icons

Some icons are shortcuts to programs on your computer. Shortcut icons usually have an arrow in the bottom-left corner. If you do not want a shortcut on your desktop, click the icon, and then drag it to the Recycle Bin. This action only removes the shortcut, not the program that it is pointing to. You can also right-click the icon, and then click Delete to remove a shortcut from your desktop.

Some icons such as My Network Places, Recycle Bin, and My Computer cannot be deleted.
